Marriage dissolved: Background

The girl’s attorney and human rights activist Shatha Nasser said that the girl filed a suit against her 30 year-old husband because he abused her psychologically and physically and also forced her into having relations with him.

To make the situation even more absurd, the girl’s family had to pay the ex-husband of the eight year-old 250 dollars because he’s without a wife now.

Marriage dissolved: Good people, sad circumstances

Luckily, one of the people attending the trial generously said that he would pay the compensation, but the reason for this action isn’t known. But any one of us would most likely do this in a situation like this. The court terminated the marriage and didn’t give the girl’s husband the chance to appeal and demand the marriage to be reinstated again.

 

Marrying little girls – even babies – isn’t a strange occurrence in Arab countries, but husbands usually wait to have intercourse until their wives hit puberty. Marriages like this one are often a result of poverty in countries like Yemen, which is one of the poorest countries outside of Africa.
