A stubble is the sexiest

Nick Neave and Kerry Shields, researchers who decided to study the connections between a stubble and being attractive, have found out that a symmetrical face with just the right amount of facial hair is much more attractive than a face that is hairless, shiny and looks like it belongs to a baby. A Santa Claus beard is, on the other hand, even less attractive. Women who took part in the research claimed that men with stubbles are firm, mature, aggressive, dominant, manly and full of testosterone (which is a key hormonal substance for your sexuality). Furthermore, they also said that men with a stubble are the best and the most romantic lovers - the best men for one-night stands as well as good for a long-term relationship!

The experiment included women between the ages of 18 and 44, but the interpretations of the findings are not all that clear-cut. Experts in the field of human evolution claim that a little hairy face shows male aggressiveness because it accentuates the size of the chin and also the teeth as a weapon. A wide lower jaw supposedly indicates that a man is good between the sheets.

Psychologists from the University of Northumbria are convinced that this type of facial hair promises women the most in all areas and at all times. They do not want their men to be too manly but they also want them to be mature. You have probably been wondering this whole time how did they manage to reach these conclusions. They used technology, of course – computer-changed photographs with the faces of 15 men were shown several times, but each time with a different amount of facial hair. Women chose between descriptions like “clean-shaven”, “light stubble”, “heavy stubble”, “light beard” and “full beard”.

Clean-shaven men are out

The photographs were shown to 76 women who had to arrange them according to the following characteristics: manliness, aggressiveness, dominance, attractiveness, age and social position. They were also asked if these men would work better in long-term or short-term relationships. I know you are interested in the findings: faces with ”full beards” were judged to be the most masculine, aggressive and socially mature. They were also described as being five years older than they really are. They were marked as the least attractive and as the worst choice for a short-term relationship. Men with ”light beards” were considered the most dominant, while those with ”light stubble” were rated the most attractive and as the ideal romantic partner for a short or long term. “Clean-shaven” men finished bottom for masculinity, dominance, aggression, and social maturity. Most women would also not have a long-term relationship with them. Are they at least the most attractive? I am afraid not. What you see in advertisements filled with clean-shaven faces is not a reflection of reality.

Being a little hairy is a sign of maturity

Hairiness is a very strong social/sexual sign and an obvious indicator of a man’s biological maturity. Many times, facial hair is associated with a successful man, while clean-shaven men bring up associations of immaturity, compliance and a lack of principles.

As a final result of the research, I should also mention that women are most attracted to men who do not seem too manly, but to men who seem to be in a post-adolescent phase, where their maturity level is not too great and not too small. These are the characteristics women supposedly look for when they are searching for a long-term partner.

The authors of the study are, of course, aware that there are huge intercultural differences in how people comprehend and respond to male facial hair.
