A Woman Can Smell When a Man Is Aroused

24.05.2009 | By: Melinda Wenner and T. P.

A new survey showed that women are more turned on by male sweat if the man is turned on.

Pheromones affect us subconsciously!

Scientists more or less guess what role pheromones play and how important they are. We know we can sense them with smell, but they supposedly work on a subconscious level, which, in the end run, means that their effect can’t be measured. However, a group of scientists got an idea of how to do this. Supposedly, a great amount of pheromones is situated in male sweat, so they asked 20 heterosexual men to sweat under different circumstances. They had to sweat while watching pornographic movies and wore small absorbing pads underneath their armpits. They weren’t allowed to use deodorant or scented soap, scented clothes and similar things during the test. The men also sweated when running and thus the scientists got a collection of sweaty pads. The scientists used electrodes to check if the guys were really aroused when watching the pornographic movies. The next step was to find 19 women who were willing to sniff these things.

Turned on by sweat

The women were asked to sniff the pads, while the scientists monitored their brain with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMRI).  This device allows us to watch all the brain’s activities – conscious and subconscious. It was actually shown that the female brain responded differently to the various smells of the pads. The sweat collected during sexual arousal activated the right orbitofrontal cortex  and the right fusiform cortex – the areas of the brain that help us recognise emotions and are in charge of perception. Both regions are in the right hemisphere of the brain, which is generally speaking in charge of smell, social responses and emotions. This is more or less indirect proof that people still communicate in an “animal” way, but we’re not aware of it. That’s why we never know what the people around us are feeling and perceiving. We often talk, but we don’t even know what and why. And now men finally know what masturbation before a date is good for, besides greater durability during sex.
