Despite the cult of skinniness, especially among women, men don’t like women who are too skinny. The cult of skinniness started flooding the western culture a long time ago. There are many girls and women who think in this way. This really isn’t unusual, seeing as the media bombard us with pictures of skinny models. Being slender doesn’t only mean beauty, but also attractiveness, success, self-control and even happiness. This isn’t really the male desire when it comes to the female body. A research in Australia showed that men prefer women with “more meat on them” rather than the slender ones. Australian magazine FHM did a research on what kind of female body the male readers prefer. The criterion was dress sizes.
Men were able to choose between women who wear sizes 36, 40 and 42. The research involved 60 thousand men and as many as 80% of them decided on women who wear sizes 40 and 42.
Most votes were given to a woman that’s size 40. She got 41% of the male votes. The woman who wears a size 42 got 39 percent of the male votes. Only 20 percent of men found the woman who wears a size 36 the most attractive. Thus, scientists have also confirmed the distinction between how women want to look (and what they think men find attractive) and what men actually find attractive.
Skinniness as the standard of attractiveness?
Where do we look for the reasons for these discrepancies between how women see women and what men expect? Magazines are to blame for caring too much about being slim. They aim to make women "feel heavenly" and at the same time make a person into a slave who has problems with watching his/her body too often. Let there be no mistake, this applies to men as well because fashion also dictates the way sexual appeal feels to them. In this area, traditional “manliness” is also going through many changes.
