Do you use condoms correctly and regularly?
Research shows that any damage to the condom is not the main reason that the condom “fails” and consequently a pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease occurs. Damage to the condom causes only 2 percent of this. A much bigger problem, according to research, is irregular and incorrect use of the condom. So, the biggest cause for pregnancy is an incorrect use of a condom or an irregular use with every intercourse.
In case of correct and regular usage, condoms are 98 percent successful in preventing pregnancy, research shows. Research also shows that the percentage is much lower with people who have been using a condom for less than a year. That percentage is 86.
Scientists have also been researching how successful it is in preventing HIV and found out that with couples (where one is HIV positive and the other not) who regularly use condoms, the chance of infection with the HIV virus is less than 1 percent. With a couple who does not use regular protection, the chances of becoming infected are between 10 and 14 percent.
