The testicles are the male version of the ovaries, except they’re on the outside of the body. They support the penis and make men out of boys. They produce the sexual hormone testosterone, which affects the libido, the way you look, the health of your bones and the strength of your muscles. Besides testosterone, they naturally also produce sperm, which enables a man to impregnate a woman. In one ejaculation, a man squirts out from 120 to 600 million sperms.
Why are the testicles on the outside of the body?
A sperm matures when an ejaculation occurs. If you were to take a sperm out of the testicles, you probably couldn’t impregnate a woman with it. This happens only during ejaculation. Temperature is of key importance for producing sperm. Because the heat has a negative effect on sperm production, the testicles aren’t inside the body. For them, temperature somewhat below body temperature is most appropriate, that’s why it’s not advisable for boys to soak in hot baths too many times. When it’s cold, the testicles simply retreat, or, in other words, they shrivel.
