How many minutes does an ideal intercourse last?
Short sex is number one, according to Australian sexual therapists. The optimal duration has been assessed as 13 minutes, but 3-minute “quickies” should also make a person feel good.
Researchers of sexuality in Australia found out something that men cannot boast about. While most would prefer a minute or so more during intercourse, women don’t really care if the situation is stormy but quick. The study was among the first in line to examine the ideal duration of sexual intercourse, meaning mostly penetration without foreplay. A random sample in the research of Americans and Canadians showed that duration between 7 and 13 minutes represents the road to satisfaction. Intercourse under 3 minutes is considered absolutely too short and most people also consider every minute after 13 minutes a waste of time.
We often have unrealistic expectations when it comes to intercourse
The purpose of the study was to show couples that they have unrealistic expectations regarding intercourse. The belief that only long sex has a healing effect on the body is quite wide-spread.
Quality is more important than duration
Short sex may be in opposition to what mostly men believe to be the best. This involves a big penis with a hard erection, which functions from dusk until dawn without problems. It is interesting that this image is in the minds of both sexes. Experts in sexuality want to paint a more realistic picture because many sexual dysfunctions (which aren’t unusual at all) can be better understood and accepted in this way.
Sexual therapist Dr. Jane Howard from Brisbane, Australia, says there’s a big difference in how men and women perceive sexuality. Women are satisfied pretty quickly, while men walk across the river unsatisfied and thirsty. At least that's so in Australia. With the amount of desert on that continent, dehydration because of intercourse is the last thing one would want.
