How is it possible for a man to be the father of your child if you haven’t had intercourse with him?

Believe it or not – there’s a possibility that a man fertilises you with the sperm of another guy. (jlp)

Subconscious adultery

Artificial insemination and adoption are only two among the correct answers. The following option, however, is more interesting: imagine that a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who recently had unprotected  sex with another man. During penetration, the sperm that remained in her vagina from previous sexual intercourse may accumulate under the crown of his glans penis. If the man has intercourse with another woman soon afterwards, it’s therefore possible to fertilise her with the sperm of another man. The transfer of the sperm of another male from one female into the other is well-known and documented in the animal world, particularly insects. As regards humans, Robin Baker and Mark Bellis extensively dealt with this topic and also suggested a theory that the size and shape of a man’s penis has evolved with the intention of removing their rival’s sperm from the partner’s vagina.

The importance of the foreskin and smegma

Men who have a circumcised penis are, of course, much less likely to transfer sperm from one woman into another. Namely, the foreskin increases the possibility of sperm to remain under the crown of the glans penis and, in addition, protects the glans from drying out, light and temperature changes. For that reason, sperm can survive much longer, even up to a week. It seems that the possibility of fertilising a female with the sperm of someone else wasn’t a sufficient reason for men to lose the foreskin in the process of evolution. It has been retained because it provides protection for the glans penis. There’s also a possibility that the aforementioned caused the development of other body’s mechanisms that decrease the possibility of having subconscious adultery. Among those mechanisms, some include smegma, discharge of the glans penis that accumulates under the foreskin and functions as a spermicide. It’s a thick and sticky substance that can easily catch the rival sperm cells and prevent their transfer.

The likelihood of such conception is extremely small, almost negligible. The information should therefore be considered more as an interesting fact.
