Peter Sarsgaard is Richard, a bored computer expert and a fresh millionaire who regularly visits strip clubs and is losing contact with reality. Because he’s infatuated with a stripper called Florence (Molly Parker), who drums in a band in her spare time, he suggest something daring to her to test the boundaries of a relationship based only on sexuality. He throws 10,000 dollars on the table and offers to take her on a three-day vacation to Las Vegas. It’s like Nine and a Half Weeks, Last tango in Paris, where the butter is replaced by ice in his behind. The rules are clear. She’ll dance and really turn him on, while he watches and can’t even touch her. But the chemistry is just too strong. Sex replaces dancing, they even French kiss and when the vacation’s over, they have a shock. Even though Florence sets the boundaries and rules, where she clearly states that she won’t allow penetration, kissing on the mouth and any serious physical contact, exactly the opposite happens, which is not a surprise seeing as they’re very attracted to one another and spend most of the time together.

The protagonist Richard becomes obsessed with Florence, the stripper, who doesn’t let him have sex at first.

But The Center of the World, where the prostitute played by Carla Gugino, who portrays Florence’s best friend, explains how she comes during anal intercourse, isn’t Pretty Woman, but a direct, realistic, honest and very intimate story. It’s a very steamy portrayal of a pathological relationship, where the orgasms are like the ones in Where Harry Met Sally. They’re fake, made up and paid for, of course, since the female crotch is the centre of the world. It’s a charming hole from which we’re born and to which we keep returning for the rest of our lives.
