When a pleasure trip turns to hell
Twentynine Palms, directed by Bruno Dumont is named after a town in California. It’s a road trip film, telling the story of an American photographer called David (David Wissak) and his French girlfriend Katarina (Yekaterina Golubeva) or Katie as he calls her. They leave Los Angeles hoping to find a suitable place in the desert for David to take his next photo shoot. In Twentynine Palms they find a hotel, and their days are mostly spent driving around in their off-road vehicle. David frequently lets Katie drive, but since she’s a pretty abysmal driver they keep wondering the deserted roads and make love whenever and wherever they have the chance. They have sex in the pool, in their room and on the bare rooks under the blazing desert sun. Their intense love is accompanied by equally intense arguments and their otherwise straightforward relationship sometimes gets complicated due to Katie’s occasional eccentric behavior and jealousy. They live a simple and relaxed life together until an unexpected, cruel and breathtaking turn of events puts an end to their fun.
Something between 9 Orgasms and Hills have Eyes
The love that David and Katie share can be easily compared to the relationship in 9 Orgasms as the main focus in on physical attraction, fairly explicit steamy sex scenes, lots of intimacy and male and female full frontal nudity. There's a strong focus on orgasms of the couple who give the impression that they actually did experience them during the shooting. Sometimes the scenes are a bit too long, but this enables the viewer to really connect with the protagonists. The movie also shows similar traits to Hills have Eyes, as their drives along dusty roads surrounded by almost scary rocks are as creepy as in the 70’s thriller. The argument scene, where Katie wonders along a dark street in front of the hotel on her own, is also scary as she’s constantly harassed by a strange car which seems to circle their hotel. The story has a very sudden, unexpected and cruel ending.
A Sexual predator and a gentle girl
David seems to be a sexual predator enslaved by the sensual body of his gentle and slightly weird girlfriend. Although verbal communication isn’t their forte, as there’s a language barrier, they are extremely compatible when it comes to sex. Proof that their sex is steamy, sensual and very satisfying are their unstoppable loud orgasms which they indulge in without any inhibitions. They have sex wherever they can, sometimes even to the point of being exhibitionists which seems to give them great pleasure. The scene where they have sex in the pool reminds me of Showgirls where Elizabeth Berkley and Kyle Maclachlan share an equally steamy sex scene. The stars of the movie Twenty-nine palms show off their naked bodies freely and without inhibitions. The sex scenes are quite brave, there is even fellatio or to be more precise full-blown oral sex. David’s predatory ways sometimes anger Katie, but in the end she always gives in to him with pleasure as intercourse is the only time where she really feels that she is loved unconditionally. Twenty-nine Palms is suitable for viewers who could handle the rape scene from Irreversible with Monica Belucci.
