Dr Alfred Kinsey (portrayed by the excellent Liam Neeson), a pioneer of world sexology, the Larry Flynt with depth and the Sigmund Freud without philosophy, was an original, ingenious and brave scientist. One of his great contributions was Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male, the first bestseller in the field of sexology, which came out in 1948. He became a star and the biggest sex expert of all times.
He was the man who knew things about sexuality that not even the ancient Romans knew, and they knew everything. He knew even more than William Howell Masters and Virginia Eshelman Johnson, who knew more than everything. And if he wanted to know everything, he had to talk to everyone. He had to take his time, do over 20 thousand interviews and experience homosexual intercourse himself (he was lured into bed by his student Peter Sarsgaard).
The real Alfred Kinsey would have been proud of this movie.
Losing virginity on the wedding night
This all seems very daring for a man who was previously known as a boring biology professor and an expert on wasps, and who lost his virginity on his wedding night, when his wife Clara (the excellent Laura Linney) lost it too. She was the only woman in his life, the woman from whom he learned everything, even the things published in his 1953 book Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. This is the book that got him crucified (he was accused of immorality) and that took away his enthusiasm, will and reputation. “Nobody’s going to tell us that our grandmothers and daughters are masturbating,” was the crowd’s angry response. The 50s were the time of “witch hunts” and a period when they wanted to ban sex. It’s no wonder that Kinsey died from a heart attack in 1956, just before he started getting his third book ready for publication (The Study of Perversion). Thank God the 60s and the 70s followed, but Kinsey unfortunately didn’t live to see them.

The movie shows Kinsey at the start of his career, when he hands out a questionnaire to his students about their sexual habits. His wife Clara tells him this won’t be any good because they’ll lie, and she suggests he should talk to them face to face, one at a time. This really gets his studies off the ground and he becomes a pioneer in sex research. As his students aren't representative enough, he takes a bigger step and starts travelling around America, meeting various individuals and finding some extreme examples of sexual habits. Because he wants to try everything himself, he has problems with his wife who realizes he has gone overboard. But this is the only way to do research in the sexual habits of modern society in detail. In the end, contemporaries reject him and accuse him of corrupting morality.
