About the movie itself

The movie Sebastiane, directed by Derek Jarman, is a real mixture of Ben Hur, Gladiator and Spartacus, except in a cheaper, more amateur and homosexual way. This controversial movie from the 70s describes the life of a young soldier named Sebastiane (Leonardo Treviglio) and all the dialogs are in Latin. The scenes are enriched with naked male bodies and homoerotic behavior between soldiers. It was exactly this boldness and explicitness that caught the eyes of the censors, who demanded that the scene with an erection during one lovemaking scene be removed. The action is set at the beginning of the 4th century, in the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian, who ordered a systematic persecution of Christians in year 303. That is why the protagonist Sebastiane becomes the most hated, but also the most loved person among the Roman soldiers, who deal with loneliness and boredom in various ways in the army camp.

Homoeroticism

A group of Roman soldiers in the camp deals with boredom in a playful and naughty way because nothing is going on. Every now and then they have bouts of strength, they fence and fight one another – always naked, while the main entertainment is provided by the boisterous entertainer Maximus or ''Max'', who tells the soldiers in vulgar Latin what he wi ll do with the first prostitute he meets when he goes back to Rome. He adores female breasts and dreams about them, even though he teases his friends with an occasional homosexual joke. During this time Sebastiane becomes somewhat of a rebel, which attracts the attention of the commanding officer, who develops romantic feelings for Sebastiane. The homoeroticism in the movie is also mixed with domination and masochism, but it doesn’t go overboard and into extremes. Everyone who enjoys the sight of male bodies, male bottoms and phalluses will enjoy watching this movie, even though some scenes seem a bit clumsy. The actors compensate for their acting abilities by posing, which is similar to the posing done on calendars and reminiscent of ancient statues, except that the statues are more alive here. The movie contains some ‘wet’ scenes, where male curves are emphasized by pouring water or milk on them. The milk is supposed to symbolize sperm, while the water is always present during the scenes of admiration or innocent male playfulness.

Symbolism and Sebastian

The movie is full of Biblical symbolism, which is evident in many scenes. The protagonist himself supposedly depicts the Christian saint Sebastian, who sacrificed himself on behalf of his religion. He is depicted many times in Renaissance and Baroque works of art as being tied to a tree with arrows in his body. Besides this, the soldier Maximus (Neil Kennedy) and Justin (Richard Warwick) enact the scene of Mary holding the dead Jesus in her lap.
