Shortbus: The boundary between pornography and erotica is vague
There is no room for stars here. Only the wacky, different, wild, basic and perverted individuals who want to let loose, relax and search for the meaning of life, party here. They are looking for new sexual experiences, all the way to extremely explicit, direct and powerfully pornographic scenes, which could even be used in porn movies. That's right,
Shortbus, directed by John Cameron Mitchell, author of cult musical drama Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starts off as a straight porn movie. It is one of the most sexually explicit movies of all time, leaving movies like The Last Temptation of Christ, The Idiots, The Dreamlife of Angels, Ken Park, Kingdom of Heaven and The Brown Bunny, where Chloe Sevigny performed famous oral sex on Vincent Gallo, far behind it.
Masturbating into the mouth
There are many such scenes and they all rock at the same time, just like in Requiem for a Dream, except that everything revolves around sex. It is about bed acrobatics of the Japanese woman Sophie (Sook-Yin Lee), about the domination of the wacky Severin (Lindsay Beamish) and about the masturbation of the depressed gay James (Paul Dawson), who films what he is doing and then comes into his own mouth. You are right, the guy is like Ron Jeremy, who is famous for autofellatio. And then we witness gay group sex between James, his boyfriend Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and a young man they pick up at the Shortbus. During their sexual escapade, they sing the American anthem into one another’s erect penis. To be more precise, Jamie sings into the young man’s ass and the young man sings into James’s penis.
An egg between her legs
We naturally also have an egg that Sophie puts between her legs and waits for her boyfriend’s vibrations, who naturally presses the remote control buttons with pleasure. The adventures in the movie are wild and fun. The director is aware that the viewers will need something more, and that is the big O, the orgasm of all orgasms, which Sophie, the sexual therapist who cannot come, dreams of. She cannot reach a climax even if she masturbates and she would kill to have one. She would literally give anything for it. One of the regular clients at Shortbus explains that she will not die if she never comes, that she doesn't need to worry, it is just how things are. This regular client knows that the female orgasm starts in the head, with the vagina dialogues, with taking it easy and relaxing, erasing the edges and boundaries most women set for themselves.
An orgasm switches off the electricity
Shortbus is actually an educational movie. It is for all the people who love sexuality and are not afraid to fulfill their desires. It is not about wild masturbation in the middle of the bathroom, lesbian intercourse or threesomes. It is about things in the head, about a chip which gives off the right vibrations, an orgasm which turns off the electricity in the whole area of New York and takes a woman straight to hell. That's right, Shortbus is a movie where women are incapable of reaching orgasms even in paradise. This movie strikes you when you least expect it.
