The quintessential femme fatale
When Sharon Stone portrayed Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct in 1992, she raised the movie femme fatale to a whole new level. She was better than Kathleen Turner in Body Heat, much better than all those actresses who played bad girls in good old black and white crime-movies. The modern day femmes fatales are more daring, meaner and sexier and the suffering of the men not only encourages but arouses them. So, post-Sharon Stone femmes fatales have to get excited while playing with their men. And Bridget Gregory, the leading lady of The Last Seduction played by Linda Fiorentino is certainly very excitable. A woman who doesn’t think twice about a stand-up quickie behind a bar, making wild love in the back-seat of the car or getting acquainted with the taste and size of a perfect stranger. Any man who has sex with her, of course, falls head over heels in love and begins his long, slow journey towards pain and suffering. She, in true femme fatale spirit, couldn’t care less and doesn’t mind telling him she only used him for sex.
A slut who doesn’t care about love
The lethal Bridget Gregory steals money from husband Clay (Bill Pullman) and runs to a small backwater town. There she seduces Mike Swale (Peter Berg) and makes movie history as a woman who turns her back on love and overturns all the old clichés where the femmes fatales in the end always suffered because of emotions they had been so good at hiding throughout the movie. What is worse than a woman who’s out for revenge? Well, a femme fatale out for revenge. And what’s worse than that? Only our Bridget, who doesn’t even need a motive for her dirty deeds – she performs them as a hobby, just to get her kicks. She is turned on by men’s suffering, playing dirty games and destroying one man after another. A killer blend of Sharon Stone in 
Basic Instinct, Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity, Kathleen Turner in Body Heat and Lena Olin in Romeo is Bleeding, she enters the movie hall of fame as the bitchiest female of them all, putting all of the others to shame with her phenomenal performance. This makes it even stranger that only a year later, she managed to ruin her career with the title role in Jade – an abysmal movie, where she played a very similar character.
Revenge for a smack
Bridget becomes truly lethal after her husband hits her. One smack across the face is enough to turn her into the most cold and calculating of all femmes fatales. And when she passionately licks the dollar bills stolen from Clay, you just know she won’t be giving them back. On her way to Chicago, she stops in a small town, gets a good job and drives local man Mike crazy. Meanwhile her husband hires a private detective who starts making Bridget’s life miserable. This leads her to devise a cunning plan, using the gullible Mike, whom she convinces with a story about violent husbands and their miserable wives, to do her dirty work. The Last Seduction is a great film noir movie with good performances and screenplay but it may not be to everyone’s taste, due to unconventional camera and John Dahl’s original take on the style and atmosphere. The movie was made in 1994.
