An Oscar for best actress
The Reader will mostly be remembered due to Kate Winslet who got an Oscar and several other awards for best actress for her leading role of Hanna Schmitz. The young David Ross is not behind her in the least for his role as her (too) young lover Michael. The movie was directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and was made after the book by Bernard Schlink from 1995.
Schlink requested that the movie be done in English because the questions it raises go beyond after-war Germany. This isn’t really an erotic movie per se, but it contains so many naked scenes and sensual sexual encounters that we can’t go past the erotic relationship between the naive Michael, who is barely over 15, and the femme fatale Hanna, who shows him how to make love to her like a real man with some decisive bed action.
Marked by an adolescent erotic experience
The story starts with a breakfast at an adult’s place – Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes) – an unknown woman slept at his place, which supposedly indicates that this middle-aged man is probably not capable of a lasting romantic relationship. A flashback then takes us into his adolescence, where we see the reason for this behavior.
As a fifteen year-old boy Michael met an attractive tram conductress named Hanna by accident in the late 1950s. She is 21 years his senior. The young Michael is played by David Kross, a 19 year-old German actor who only learned how to really speak English for this movie. Their story begins when Michael goes to thank her like a well-brought-up German city boy for helping him when he was ill. He watches her as she is taking her stockings off. He is afraid he offended her and runs away, but he returns and this time she surprises him. She sends him to get some coal and when he comes back all dirty, she runs a bath for him – with a promise that she won’t watch him. She naturally doesn’t keep her promise, she comes nearer to him from behind, squeezes up to him and the passionate erotica begins...
Sensual lovemaking scenes between the experienced Kate and the young David
The lovemaking scenes between them are shot with feeling, intimately and aesthetically. We know Kate Winslet from great movies like Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, etc. She took her clothes off for the tenth time when playing Hanna, but she says she is not going to do it again unless it is absolutely necessary. She doesn’t want to be remembered for taking her clothes off in every movie. Even though she doesn’t have a typical Hollywood body and she is the mother of two, she feels self-confident in her body and doesn’t allow the media to dictate what she should look like. She even protested against the retouching of her photographs, which was done by GQ magazine.
Kate supposedly helped the young David Kross to relax during the scenes with humour. She also complimented him as being a professional actor. They both supposedly had fun during shooting.
Reading is sexy
The relationship between the young Michael and the femme fatale Hanna is made up of sexual encounters and reading. Michael remains cold towards his peers, who can never fully satisfy him even later in life because they can never reach Hanna. Reading has special significance to Hanna. It is not only about the intimacy of the act or about an erotic voice reading. This meaning is revealed in the second part of their unusual story, which is no longer erotic, but deals with difficult ethical questions connected to the holocaust. Reading connects them all the way up to Hanna’s death. However, it is no longer erotic, but has a completely different meaning. This is definitely a movie which is worth your time.
