Sex and money
Body of Evidence got terrible reviews and loads of snipe comments from the critics, it was, in short, a major failure. However, its beginning could be described as shocking, striking and sexy. It looks extremely promising, with Madonna playing the erotic leading role, but then the tempo gradually slows down and erotic scenes become merely a means of catching at straws to keep the viewers’ attention.
It all begins with the death of an elderly millionaire who had a much younger mistress, a naughty nymphomaniac called Rebecca. She automatically becomes the main suspect because he leaves her $8 million; they arrest her on suspicion of murder. Even Rebecca’s lawyer, a family man called Frank, succumbs to her charms: he begins a torrid and kinky affair with her. Frank’s wife Sharon ,who in spite of their happy relationship cannot fulfill her husband’s fantasies, gradually finds out about the affair.
The lawyer and his client get involved in a passionate affair.
How Madonna lost her battle with Sharon Stone
At approximately the same time two erotic thrillers came out, with two fatal women playing the leading roles and with some very similar scenes. In Body of Evidence, Madonna wanted to recreate the fatal Sharon Stone who became famous only a year earlier with her legendary role of Catherine in
Basic Instinct. But when Body of Evidence came out in 1993, Sharon’s glory days were far from over - Body of Evidence just wasn’t good enough. Even naked Madonna couldn’t save the movie. It lacked the mixture of fatality, sex appeal and acting skills, which Sharon provided in abundance.
Madonna wanted to resemble fatal Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.
A movie for Madonna fans
Movie Body of Evidence offered Madonna an opportunity to prove herself a true sex symbol on film screens as well. She portrayed a seductive and dominant lover who doesn’t hesitate to use cuffs and wax. If you’re keen on Madonna’s perfectly-shaped naked body, Body of Evidence should be your first choice. Although she is slightly clumsy as an actor, her daring character makes up for that when it comes to erotic scenes. Cinema audiences were deprived of one of these (it was only released on DVDs), where Madonna pours hot wax over William Dafoe’s naked body. You can decide for yourself if it really is hot enough to be censored. Although it was rated as one of the worst sex scenes ever filmed, many disagree and claim that Madonna set her audience on fire by being naked and sultry in this movie.
The movie was Madonna's chance to prove herself as a sex symbol on film screens as well.
Lawyer’s affair
There are two parallel stories in the movie: one takes place at the court and the other in every other place where Rebecca and Frank have sex. Frank, the lawyer, is almost a double of detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) from Basic Instinct. They both succumb to by blonde seductive ladies who introduce them to sexual pleasures they have never experienced before. Frank is a happy family man whose private life and happiness are soon endangered by his pretty client. They become entangled in a passionate relationship and Frank is literally torn between the love for his wife (to whom he sensually makes love at the beginning of the movie) and the uncontrollable lust for another woman, insatiable Rebecca, a murder suspect.
