Carrington is a movie about a woman who is very much in love with her gay friend and has sex with several other men, who are his lovers. Or, Carrington is a movie about a gay who is in love with a woman but has sex with numerous men, who are at the same time her lovers. This information only is enough to tell you how extremely bold and sexually vivid this movie is. Emma Thompson plays a woman named Carrington, who is a painter. Her haircut is typically boyish and she has long ago abandoned her name Dora because it annoyed her. So the fact that gay men actually see her as a male isn’t so surprising. When a writer Lytton Strachey (played by bearded Jonathan Pryce) sees her for the first time he asks his friend: “Who is this handsome guy in front of your house?” When he finds out Carrington is a woman he’s completely astounded. Still she manages to evoke long forgotten emotions in him and their mostly platonic romance (kisses and occasional masturbation are only exceptions) begins. They live together in a countryside cottage for fifteen years.

I think we all agree that Emma Thompson isn’t the most attractive woman in the world and you certainly wouldn’t expect her  to play in movies where she displays her sexual skills. But her performance in sex scenes is so convincing and playful that she totally overwhelms us. She should be awarded with a special Oscar for the mixture of comedy and eroticism. If you’ve seen her in the movie The Tall Guy where she makes love to Jeff Goldblum, you know what we’re talking about. She is so passionate that they make total mess of their apartment. Thompson experiences a similar platonic love in the drama The Remains of the Day, where she falls in love with Anthony Hopkins. It seems that Carrington is a movie where Emma Thompson compensates for all the times she didn’t get laid in The Remains of the Day, and she enjoys it a lot even though she acts like a reserved spinster in the beginning of the movie.

Young Mark Gertler (played by Rufus Sewell), who is very much interested in Carrington, just can’t get close to her. He decides to introduce her to Mr. Strachey and his teachings because he knows the gentleman is gay and therefore harmless. Unfortunately Carrington falls in love with him and they decide to live together. In order to avoid his anger Carrington decides to lose her virginity to Mark. Even though it seems she doesn’t enjoy the sex, Mark manages to awaken her sexual drive and Carrington from then on constantly switches partners. “I feel like acting in a farce”, says Jonathan Pryce, but we could say that in this movie some drama should be replaced by comedy and it should be shortened for about half an hour to make it less boring. Director Christopher Hampton wrote the script for the cult movie Dangerous Liaisons and, funnily, what this movie would need is some danger in numerous Thompson’s liaisons.
