The Japanese Last Tango in Paris

If we were looking for words to describe the movie Ai No Corrida or In the Realm of the Senses, the appropriate expressions would be: shocking, explicit, almost pornographic, unimaginable, frightening, romantic and eccentric. The story is set in the 1930s in pre-war Japan. The viewer follows the development of a passionate romance between Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) and Kichizo Ishida (Tatsuya Fuji). Many agree that this is a Japanese version of the Bertolucci movie Last Tango in Paris because the committed and almost perverted sex, which becomes an obsession, is almost the only type of communication the couple has.

Sada is a former prostitute who gets a job as a maid in a hotel. While secretly watching her employer having sex with his wife, she is overcome by an unusual physical desire. This develops into an unforgettable affair which breaks many taboos and ends with the cutting off of genitals. The movie was so controversial due to its sexual scenes that the Japanese authorities prohibited its release in Japan, so it was edited and finished in France. The sexual scenes were censored at the Japanese premiere and In the Realm of the Senses only became available in video rental stores in 1990. The British committee for movie classification gave it the 18+ marking, which means that it was appropriate only for viewers over 18, but they still demanded the removal of a scene involving a small boy. The movie is still prohibited in Ireland.

Extremely explicit erotic scenes

The movie was too brave even for the nineteenseventies, and they banned it in many countries. The viewers will enjoy many scenes of nudity and sex which occasionally borders on pornography. At times the action in the movie seems almost ridiculous, but the sexual charge between the protagonists is consistently convincing. Sada’s worshipping of Ishida’s penis is shown explicitly and breaks all the barriers of mainstream movies. His worshipping of Sada’s crotch also goes past any reservations when he licks her menstruation and eats an egg he previouslydipped into Sada’s juices. The scene where Sada slices off and stores the most delicate part of her lover after erotic asphyxia will make many people’s hair stand on end.

 

Made after a true story

Believe it or not, the movie was made after a true story. The hot story of Sada Abe caught the attention of the public, the movie makers and artists who presented her love in many ways and gave it an air of almost mythological mysteriousness. Sada was a Japanese prostitute who became renowned as a troublemaker in the brothel because of stealing the clients’ money. She later becomes the mistress of a well-situated Japanese man Kinnosuke Kasahara, who explained that Sada was sexually insatiable, that she wanted to have his penis several times in a row and demanded that his hand constantly rest on her crotch. When the romance with Kasahara ended, the 29 year-old met Kichizo Ishida, for whom their affair became fatal. They were both overcome by fatal attraction and were almost obsessed. They spent days and nights in bed, where they had marathon sex sessions, drank and enjoyed many other physical pleasures while geishas sang to them. In one of their encounters, Sada pulled a kitchen knife out of her purse and threatened to kill her lover if he would ever be with another woman, including his wife. She threatened to cut off his penis and testicles. She really did it at the end because she couldn’t imagine him being with another woman. Ishida’s private parts were exhibited in the University Medical School in Tokyo after her arrest. They disappeared from there after the Second World War and were never found. Until her arrest, Sada had them close to herself, walked around the city with them and fondled them in private.

The case of John and Lorena Bobbit

That things portrayed in the movie In the Realm of the Senses really happen is proved by the story of John and Lorena Bobbit, an American couple which became famous for Lorena’s brave act. One night John supposedly raped her when drunk. When he fell asleep, she grabbed a kitchen knife and sliced off more than half of his penis in his sleep, drove away in the car and threw the penis out the window into a nearby field. She soon became aware of the seriousness of her act and called the police. They were able to stitch John’s penis back on and he became ... a very successful porn star, while Lorena became the idol of many feminists.
