A movie which felt no shame
Last Tango In Paris, made by Bernardo Bertolucci in 1972, is a movie which deals with many things and is not embarrassed by any of them. And what is even more interesting, a movie, which despite all of this works as a profound study of sexuality, is still considered a taboo for many. It is true, Last Tango In Paris is a movie which makes us feel embarrassed. Embarrassed because we have seen it. If we admit to have actually watched Last Tango In Paris, then something is wrong with us. Even more so, if we say that we liked it. Remember that Last Tango In Paris includes many direct, perverse, striking and explicit sequences, which still make it a masterpiece. This is an amazing achievement, and it separates it from the other movies, which use such scenes only to attract attention and the viewers. All these scenes are only an addition, just a reason for a deep pathologic relationship, where a man and a woman have sexual relationship, and also show a huge amount of psychological attachment and a convincing study of such a relationship. A true classic of the seventh art that was listed by many critics on their best movies of all times list.
This movie would not be what it is, if it were not for Marlon Brando
It is obvious that without Marlon Brando starring in Tango, things would be different. Especially if some unknown actor played his role. Brando gives sense to all those primitively perverted sentences and doings. After all, he is the best and most respected actor of all times. Brando even shows his chubby ass! And he does it in such a way, that we totally believe him. Even his ass would deserve an Oscar. It was this scene which made all the moralists turn their heads, which is absurd considering that Brando captured the essence of his character perfectly in this way. The essence of a man who does not live by the rules and whose only priority is his own well-being. Brando plays a bitter 45 year-old man, whose wife recently committed a bloody suicide, Maria Scheider plays a young girl about to be married to some boring filmmaker. They meet in Paris, rent an apartment without furniture by coincidence, start having it off maniacally, and he sets the rules, which must be abided by them both.
Just wild passion and lust
No names, past or feelings. Just pure sexual encounters and bodily lust. The little lady accepts the game and the innocent affair quickly changes into an obsession. Despite the fact, that he is insulting, vulgar and rude and that he almost anally rapes her, she keeps returning to the apartment and surrendering herself to him. Unmatched pathology. A masochistic enjoyment of an inferior position which greatly attracts and arouses the young wench. It is true that they go through some nice moments, but he always spoils them with his vulgarity, probably carried out by him only because he is afraid of his emotions. Emotions are reserved for his dead wife, when he cries like a little boy over her dead body, which is actually the high point of the whole movie. Yes, you have read it right, a movie, containing so many explicit scenes, is actually the best in its most serious moment. The moment, when all the repressed emotions surface and Marlon Brando truly shows that he was probably the world’s greatest actor.
He changed when he took her anally
As unbelievable as it sounds, it is the anal intercourse which changes his perspective. After that Brando falls in love and breaks all the rules, which he set himself. He starts telling her about his past, harasses her about having a serious relationship, marriage and other things. For her, all of this came too late, as she was rejected by him so many times in the past whenever feelings were involved. She is in charge now, now she makes the rules. Now she is the man, and he the woman. Very similar to Nine And A Half Weeks, which could be called Last Tango In Paris 14 years later. If we say that the movie is about a man and a woman behaving like their pubic regions, we hit the spot. He just wants to be a penis, she a vagina. When they fail, things spiral downwards. Brando reclaimed his glory the same year with The Godfather, while Maria Schneider tumbled into a mixture of crises and catastrophes, ruled by drugs, nervous breakdowns and sexual confusion. If we called her a spare version of Brigitte Bardot, we would not be off the mark. It is truly sad that Tango was her only tango, her only role worth mentioning, after which she failed to cash in and use her instant fame. She was 20 years old, played with Marlon Brando, and the movie became one of the most controversial and notorious movies of all times. No wonder she flipped and could not find good roles any more.
