Como Agua Para Chocolate, or Like Water for Chocolate, has become the most profitable Mexican film of all times. At times it reminds one of Jamon Jamon, and even if it's a little less hot, it's more romantic and enchanting. The centre of the plot is an unhappy young woman Tita (Lumi Cavazos), whose mother told her not to marry and who has to take care of her till mother's death. Her sister Rosaura (Yareli Arizmendi) steals a handsome youth Pedro (Marco Leonardi) away from her, and poor Tita becomes more miserable from week to week. She tries to stifle her repressed sexual desire and follow the strict directions of her tiresome mother. What's especially interesting is the link made between food and sex, which is deftly put there by director Alfonso Arau, who starred in the American western The Wild Bunch.

The orgasm that put a shed on fire

 

The connection between sex and food can be clearly seen in the scene, where Tita's other sister Gertrudis (Claudette Maille), afther having a big lunch, intensely aroused runs into a shower shed, which literally goes up in flames from violent sexual energy. This and brings to mind the scene from film Pirates (1991), in which Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick made love. The fame of her wild sexuality reaches into the neighbouring villages and brings to her an excited soldier, who comes to see her on horseback and who takes the stark naked Gertrudis with him to show her adventurous life. Director Arau doesn't think that food is enough. He pays attention to the physical energy created during sexual activity that causes the »repressed« instincts to connect with the »fluids« and lead to an orgasm that a heart of course cannot bear. Como Agua Para Chocolate is thus a film, that represents the world of erotica in terms of the supernatural, which means that it attempts to show sexuality in a new light.

 

Like Water for Chocolate is today the most viewed Mexican film of all times.

Sexual abstinence

 

The central story is based on the character of Tita, who is even forbidden to flirt. Just think of all that must come to accumulate in her soft and mature body over time and imagine how terrible it must be if it's forbidden for you to let it all out. While one of her sisters almost explodes from feeling horny, the other marries the above-mentioned Pedro, which makes Tita's sexual hunger even greater, as the young man moves into the family house. The situation is even more tense when Pedro tells her that he married her sister just to be able to be closer to her. As he is aware of the fact that Tita isn't allowed to have sex, he himself decides to practice abstinence. His wife, Rosaura, isn't happy with that, and he has to make her at least one child, who is, however, breastfed by Tita. Her mother doesn't even allow her and Pedro a kiss. In time, she gets her to undertake a therapyy under the guidance of Dr John (Mario Ivan Martinez), who is, however, also in love with her.

After she returns back home after a few months, she discovers a shocking family secret, a memory of her conservative mother having sexual intercourse with the black servant years ago. She then finally "tastes" Pedro's body, and then she has to confront Dr John's mad infatuation with her. This is certainly a very special and interesting film. For example, we're told that after Tita was born, there came a huge amount of tears flowing from her mother's vagina, which has turned into salt used in the kitchen. The baby girl has been crying a lot already in her mother's tummy.
