What does the title mean, anyway?

Well, you go to the jungle, catch a monkey and give it a spanking, right? Well, not really. Substitute penis for monkey and caressing for spanking and you’re there. It’s an American slang term for male masturbation. The movie’s story line revolves around a teenager and the many problems he encounters because he hasn’t got time to masturbate – he keeps starting and then gets interrupted every single time. Which of course makes him even more horny and tense. At first, the family dog bothers him, then it’s his friends and finally his crush turns him down, which means that he’s now horny as hell and his inability to release all that pent-up sexual tension is beginning to cause physical pain in his balls.

Incest

Our teenager, portrayed by Jeremy Davies with just the right amount of confusion and awkwardness finds a solution that is so shocking you won’t come upon it in any other comedy. The kid ends up having sex with his mom. Yup, you read it right the first time. Spanking the Monkey is a movie involving incest with a mother, who’s not at all reluctant and enjoys herself a lot. A sick situation in reality, but it makes for excellent comedy, which basically makes fun out of sex. Another gem is that the mom is actually in bed with a broken leg, while dad is constantly on business trips, which means that she has some strong and unfulfilled needs to and that her son’s lust is actually useful to her.

How does it happen?

Jeremy Davies is Raymond, a promising young med student, who’s ordered by his dad to look after his injured but very attractive and sexually unfulfilled mom. Although it’s just for a few days the timing couldn’t be worse as Raymond had just split up with a potential partner. Besides that, his duties include taking care of the dog, and brushing his teeth to keep the gums form bleeding. And the job itself isn’t at all attractive as he has to play nurse to his mum, carry her to the toilet, massage her legs with ointment and bring her food. Since he’s a young, healthy male he also needs to masturbate. Because he’s always interrupted he becomes horny as hell and start looking at his mother in a weird, forbidden and perverted way. But it’s kind of hard to blame him as his mom (played by the naked Alberta Wilson) lounges on the bed half naked, struts her stuff under the shower and lets him wash her intimate parts. If you add his girl troubles and his problems with masturbating to the equation, you almost understand him. I know the story sounds very avant-garde and even sick, but it is a comedy and not meant to be taken seriously. It’s just the kind of movie that makes you laugh at things that would otherwise appall you – a comedy which evades clichés and makes mincemeat out of taboos.

Alcohol was to blame

Mom does touch her son but in a normal motherly way. But the hormone-crazed body of the young guy just reacts in a very weird way. One day, they both get drunk and have a crazy party. Mum lies on her stomach and Raymond starts massaging her legs. He keeps moving higher and mum lifts up her nightie and shows her panties. Then, incest happens, shocking the viewers who weren’t expecting this, in spite of everything. This is a movie where a woman cheats on her husband with her son and a movie about a woman who pays back her husband as he also had a mistress in tow on his business trip. Incest is a terrible and appalling thing, but in this case it’s just another joke in a really crazy black comedy called Spanking the Monkey.
