About a boy who dressed in his mother's clothes
The 2003 movie The Mudge Boy isn’t for everyone. The story is too intense and special to please viewers who like no-brainers. Its complexity will make you think, whether you like it or not. The main character Duncan (Emile Hirsch) is a fragile teenage boy who has a very strange way of dealing with his mother’s death. He seems to relive her life as he dresses in her clothes and falls in love with his only friend Perry (Tom Guiry), the boy from the neighboring farm. When he’s not with Perry he plays with his pet chicken – he likes to put the chicken’s head into his mouth – which of course cracks up the local kids, who tease him to death. Duncan is truly strange and even his strict father Edgar (excellently portrayed by Richard Jenkins) can’t help him come out of this strange mental state. He’s not even bothered about the kids teasing him and is happy when they invite him to parties and outings. At first the viewer is led to believe that he’s attracted to a busty girl, but then we realize that he’s interested in his best friend Perry, who sometimes shows him his hard-on and boasts of his size.
A slightly unhinged teenage boy dresses in his mother’s clothes.
Sexually promiscuous friend
That the sexed-up Perry abuses him in his father’s garage with Duncan wearing his mother’s wedding dress is hardly surprising. What comes as a shock is how the scene is portrayed and performed. Perry first forces Duncan to oral sex and insists in spite of the remark that his penis tastes of urine. Then he rapes him anally, in a very ruthless and rough way. Though Duncan cries and pleads with him (in vain) we still get a sense that he might actually be enjoying this. He feels like a woman, like his mother who is deflowered by her husband on her wedding night. A daring movie, with great performances, directing and camera – one that you will not find easy to forget. And for the record - the sexually explicit scene described earlier is not merely provocation, it’s an integral part of the unusual story of two teenage boys who are awakening sexually. Or rather of the older boy awakening the younger and at the same time uncovering his own hidden homosexual tendencies. The movie is even romantic in some places, but on the whole realistic, uncompromising and maybe even too direct.
The Mudge Boy takes you unawares and is guaranteed to shock and move you.
