Where The Truth Lies: Surrendering to her teenage fantasies
The movie Where the Truth Lies takes places in 1957 and 1972. In 1957, a young woman was found murdered in the hotel suite of a comedy duo reminiscent of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis or The Rat pack. Fifteen years after the event, a young journalist called Karen O’Connor decides to uncover the truth and meets with the comedians Lanny Morris and Vince Collins, her once teenage idols. They seemed to enjoy the high life but through the movie we see their lives as they were in reality – especially in the bedroom. The ambitious young woman first meets Larry and later Vince, but has an affair with both as she can’t resist fulfilling her teenage fantasies. The closer she gets to uncovering the truth, the more she gets entangled into a strange web of emotions and fantasies.
A young journalist goes behind the scenes and uncovers the lives of two famous showmen.
Where The Truth Lies: Alluring erotic scenes
Where The Truth Lies won high critical acclaim as a quality drama with very tasteful erotic sequences. It was considered to be a modern take on the film noir genre, very popular in the nineteen forties and fifties where femmes fatales and elegant men graced the silver screen. A mixture of orgies, lesbian relationships, group sex and frontal nudity supplies the erotic angle. The viewer follows event through the eyes of Karen, a smart, sexy and ambitious journalist, who instead of exposing the Lanny and Vince exposes herself to them and for a moment becomes very vulnerable. In general, the movie should please fans of the film noir genre, with added modern erotic scenes which would of course be unthinkable in the classic film noir era. The actors, who gave a bold and excellent performance deserve praise also for embracing nudity and their sensuous erotic scenes.
The cast is excellent and daring and the movie is reminiscent of the classic film noir genre from the 40ties and fifities.
Where The Truth Lies: A brave acting crew
Although Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth, who usually takes on more romantic roles, have played their parts brilliantly and even touched on gay love, young Alison Lohan has no trouble keeping up with them. If you’ve seen her teen movie Flicka, you’ll be amazed at the transformation. She is now an attractive and seductive young woman, who doesn’t think twice about a little lesbian love-making. The erotic scenes are very direct and carefully directed to grip the viewers’ attention form beginning to end. Perfectly in tune with other movies directed by Atom Egoyan, who made a name for himself wit the 1994 hit Exotica. Atom Egoyan had in fact planned on more sexually explicit scenes, bordering on pornography, but had to back down due to censorship. Since the rating NC17 spells certain commercial doom for movies, Egoyan had to cut the raunchiest scenes in order to avoid it. Despite that,
Where The Truth Lies remains an incredibly sexy and provocative homage to the film noir genre and certainly deserves the attention of the more demanding viewer.
