How to loosen up a stuffy yuppie

How do you change a young, reserved and, due to the recent death of his wife, estranged yuppie into a normal human being? Well, you have to be a woman, above 40 years of age, with enough sex appeal and just a touch vulgar. You need to get your hands on him while he’s drunk and invite him up for coffee. As soon as he lies down on the couch, you grab his penis (ignoring potential protests), put it into your mouth, unbutton his shirt and then have wild sex with him until you both reach a loud an explosive climax. If you successfully perform all of these steps, he’ll be yours and will keep coming back for more. This is exactly what Nora Baker, a waitress, does to James Spader (Max). Nora is a Marilyn Monroe fan, who long ago lost her son to overdose. The young businessman Max falls in love with her after a few sessions of steamy sex. The interesting thing is that the film doesn’t focus so much on the age difference but rather on the social class and way of thinking. When Max introduces Nora to his friends they aren’t worried about her age – they are outraged that he chose a simple, slightly older waitress instead of a rich young lawyer.

A More Daring Version of the Legendary The Graduate

White Palace is a modern version of The Graduate with added steamy sex scenes. Instead of Anne Bancroft seducing Dustin Hoffman we have Susan Sarandon, who besides great acting skills brings to the movie her undiminished sex appeal. She is just as sexy as in The Rocky Horror Picture Show where she played a young nymphomaniac or in Atlantic City (the scene where she smears lemon juice over her naked breasts is superb) starring with the older Burt Lancaster, not to mention the passionate love-making with Kevin Costner in Bull Durham. White Palace also reminds us of The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, where the older Vivian Leigh finds herself a young lover in the shape of Warren Beatty. Due to its excellent screenplay, the plot is hugely enjoyable – small wonder as Alvin Sargent has dealt with similar topics in such movies as The Sterile Cuckoo and The Way We Were, with Liza Minelli, Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford falling in and out of love. He’s also responsible for the script of Unfaithful where Diane Leigh cheated on Richard Gere with the young and handsome Olivier Martinez.

The Pace is a Bit Fast

The story is fluent and convincing but the director Louis Mandoki who warmed our hearts with When a Man Loves a Woman (just remember the hot pool scene with Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan) did make one teeny mistake. The pace is a bit too quick- it gives the impression that the whole affair took place win one afternoon with scenes ending a little too quickly. Nevertheless, White Palace is a very pleasing and in places even funny movie, which got high critical acclaim in 1990, despite failing to be a box office hit. Susan Sarandon was 43 at the time, while James Spader was three years older than his character Max. White Palace could be inspired by Susan Sarandon's love life as she is dating Tim Robinson who’s 11 years her junior. Whether she caught him using the same techniques, of course, remains a mystery.
