Pier Paolo Pasolini, the king of perversion, sex, morbidity and destroying taboos, went the furthest he ever went in his career in his last movie, even though his career was filled with scandal. This is a movie version of the most disgusting novel by Marquis de Sade. He went even further than his most devoted fans expected. He even went further than Dušan Makavejev in his 1974 movie Sweet Movie, where the protagonists unashamedly urinated into the camera. He went further than Peter Greenaway in The Baby of Macon, where one woman was raped in front of a theatre audience. This is a movie about four great men who completely let go. They went to the limits of good taste. On the screen they tested the most perverse ideas of the famous Marquis de Sade on 18 people.

This is Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste, but there’s no time for parody and Martians. This is the cult horror movie Bloodsucking Freaks, but without the science fiction. This is about fascists, the extreme of all extremes. This is for lovers of ultimate fetishes, where women lose their virginity at age seven and boys have to eat excretions for lunch. This is another Sodom and Gomorrah, where we see tongues being cut, penises being burned, nipples being fried, eyes being poked out and boys being raped anally. This is a really disgusting, morbid and highly provocative movie, where many people saw a parody of repressive systems, naturally done in a very daring, extreme and brave way. The story is set in 1944, in a made-up Republic of Salo, which is occupied by Nazis. Literature enthusiasts will also get associations of Dante’s Inferno. The whole story is set around four men – the four men in charge of the Republic of Salo. They marry one another’s daughters and form a special pact. Then they kidnap 18 young people (nine girls and nine boys), add four elderly prostitutes and start their violent and erotic show.

 

It might not be a coincidence that the director, Pier Paolo Pasolini, was murdered right after the movie premiere.

If you say that Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was brutally killed with a mallet only a few days after the premiere, shot the most unusual, disgusting, brutal, morbid, sexually explicit and shockingly frightening movie of all time in 1976, you wouldn’t be far from the truth.
