Women-in-prison movie
If you saw movies The Big Doll House, The Big Bird Cage and Caged Heat, made in 1974 by Jonathan Demme, author of The Silence of the Lambs, you saw everything. Everything that the so-called WIP genre had to offer. Women-in-prison movies are part of the exploitation movie, or in other words, the sexploitation genre. They show women in prison and present the opportunity for scenes showing naked bodies in the shower, masturbation, lesbian love and abuse of prisoners by prison guards. It’s always the same “shit” and you can rarely find a movie that stands out and includes more than just inexpensive selling naked skin and showing an action ending where the leading actress spectacularly escapes from prison at the end.
Pop art porn
In Jitsoruku Onna Kanabetsusho: Sei-Jigoku, (The Story of a Woman in Jail: Sex Hell) is nothing more than a display of the clichés of the American women-in-prison movies. Or in other words, the clichés of the movies that were made in the same way by Italians. For instance, infamous Jesus Franco who made his first movie in 1969, that is, three years before Americans. This time, however, the master is Koyu Ohara, master of the so-called pop art porn which was a big hit in the Japanese market. So big that two sequences were filmed. It shows a woman named Mayumi (Hitomi Kazue) who learns all the stereotypes of the WIP genre to her cost; from the first gynaecological examination to the torture practised by her inmates who even pass urine on her and pluck her pubic hair. From lesbian love to the final escape for which she hides the key into her bloody tampon. Nothing new, nothing particularly interesting. It’s just a women-in-prison movie showing Japanese women instead of American women and the obvious goal of the director was cheap nudity and soft erotic sequences, especially in the scenes when the leading actress remembers her lover and the way they made love and the scene in the bath tub where an inmate satisfies her with her hand and later she falls in love with the inmate.
