A condom for women is one of the ways of protecting yourself against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. Female condoms are made of latex or polyurethane, just like their male counterparts, but they are usually bigger. At each end of the female condom there is a flexible ring. If your partner is unwilling or unable to use protection for whatever reason, you can use it yourself – here are our top ten tips on how to use female condom safely and in a pleasurable way.

1.    A condom for women must be correctly inserted before the penis touches the vagina. It can also be used in anal sex.

2.    Before having vaginal sex, squeeze the ring at the closed end of the female condom and insert it high into your vagina. The open, outer ring should cover the area around your vaginal opening and protect your external genitals against infections.

3.    In anal sex, remove the ring at the closed end and fit the condom over your partner’s erect penis. Then he should insert it into your anal opening.

4.    You have to make sure that your partner’s penis touches the outer ring instead of the unprotected area of your external genitals.

5.    The female condom has to be removed immediately after sexual intercourse, before you get up. To remove it, twist the outer ring to keep the sperm inside and gently pull it out of the vagina. Wrap it up and dispose of it in an appropriate way.

6.    A condom for women should be stored away from excessive heat or cold, away from rough and sharp surfaces that could tear it or wear it away, and away from direct sunlight.

7.    Use a new condom every time you have sexual intercourse. Also, never use the same condom in vaginal and anal sex.

8.    Never use female and male condoms at the same time.

9.    When you use female condom, you should only use water-based lubricants because oil-based lubricants can damage it.

10.    Never throw a used condom in the toilet because it can clog it.
