Vaginal Ring, a Type of Hormonal Contraceptives

16.01.2010 | By: S. J.

You don't like using a condom? You forget to take contraceptive pills? You don't want to have children yet? The vaginal ring, a type of hormonal contraceptive, may be the answer for you.

A vaginal hormonal ring can be put into the vagina by the woman herself. It has to be replaced only once a month and it effectively protects you from pregnancy. A vaginal ring should be removed after 21 days. As its name suggests, a hormonal ring emits a small quantity of hormones which prevent ovulation and thus stop the monthly release of eggs from the ovaries. After three weeks, a woman makes a 7-day pause so that her period can take place. After the pause she repeats the process with a new ring. The insertion and the removal of the hormonal ring is very simple and the vaginal muscles, which hold the ring tightly, make sure that it stays in place.

How does the vaginal ring work?

The vaginal ring contains two kinds of hormones which prevent conception (just like contraceptive pills), i.e. oestrogen and progestin. The vaginal walls absorb the hormones from the ring and suck them into the woman’s bloodstream. When used properly, the hormonal ring guarantees a 99 percent protection with only a low contents of hormones.

The vaginal ring is available in many countries, where you can get it with your doctor’s prescription. The use of this hormonal contraceptive is recommended also to women over 35 years of age.
