Is fidelity natural?
We checked if fidelity was a natural thing among animals. What do you think? Is it? Read about it in the article below.
Fidelity is rare among animals, but they are familiar with the concept of “paying” for sex. Often when it suits us we make references to the animal world. Maybe even more often, we want to be superior to animal. Here, however, we will not discussion if we are comparable to animals because of the dilemma caused by the nature. There are some interesting findings reached by researchers studying the sexual practices of animals are presented below.
Some male birds buy love with food
Promiscuity is the most common phenomenon among all the species of animals. Animals differentiate between sexual and social monogamy. This means that they often live in some sort of community, or two partners together raise young ones, but the young ones may be conceived by more than one partner.
Not only that. Animals are familiar with the concept of paying for sexual intercourse. In most cases, males pay their females. You all probably know the story about birds and bees. Birds are quite suitable to explain sexuality. In certain species of birds, males are known for bribing females with food. Sometimes they even give their chosen lovers a bigger piece than their partners.
Apes mate longer than an hour
If you move closer to human beings and take a look at apes, you will find similar behaviour. Male macaques make advances to females and provide services to them in exchange for sex. On average, a female mates 1.5 times an hour. Females can also mate 3.5 times an hour with appropriate stimulation. They clean the hairs of other females, young ones or other males in exchange for friendship, protection and the position in the community. Males do that in exchange for sex.
Males behave in a very economical way. The price they have to pay is adjusted to current circumstances and supply as well as current competition. This, however, does not mean that they are not jealous. Among females, fighting and injuries are completely normal.
Although human beings are not like animals, their behaviour is sometimes very similar to their behaviour.
