Although it seems that an individual’s sex role is determined at birth, it sometimes turns out differently.

We are born as boys and girls

It’s already clear at birth whether a newborn is a girl or boy. Physical differences between the sexes are caused by chromosomes, or more precisely, the last pairs of chromosomes (XX or XY), as well as by the functioning of hormones. The physical sexual identity is indicated by the external genital structure (genitalia) and the secondary signs which cause puberty; therefore, development of breasts and hips, differences in hair growth, etc.

The physical or body image of sexual identity also requires the other pole called the “psychological” side. This refers to understanding of one’s own sex role and experiencing one’s sexuality. The latter can be opposite to the physical side, which means that a man feels more like a woman despite his genitalia. And vice versa, a woman considers herself to be more like a man.

How does the environment affect our sexual identity?

A child assumes his or her sex role from the age of two. This also depends on the environment in which the child grew up and the reactions of the people in his or her surroundings. In developing sexual maturity, a girl follows the mother’s example and a boy follows the father’s one. Some cultures mark sexual maturity with initiation rituals. These are rituals of circumcision or another body modification where sometimes extreme cruelty is used. Our society is very open to different sexual identities, or it’s gradually starting this process. Nevertheless, every society has its rules on what is feminine and masculine. As soon as a deviation or mismatch appears, it doesn’t go undetected. Biologists tried to explain the whole concept of choosing sexual identity with the fact that there is a gen which determines a person’s sexual orientation. This of course doesn’t hold true because in that case sexual orientation would be inherited from generation to generation.

The crisis of sexual identity can cause an individual’s isolation from a society and even depression.

 

Confusion about sexual identity can lead to sadness

If society doesn’t accept an individual’s sexual identity, this can create a lot of mixed emotions in the individual. Foremost, it involves a strong feeling of something forbidden. As my friends, colleagues and family don’t accept that, I have to keep the truth about me a secret. A person who is unable to express his or her sexuality in a proper manner is definitely unhappy. In many cases these people search for groups that would accept them for who they are.

 

Transsexuality

Gender dysphoria is a condition in which a person feels insecure about his or her sexual identity. Such people feel they are trapped within a body of the wrong sex. They are known as transsexuals. The condition doesn’t involve hermaphrodism, which literally means biological bisexuality, but only indicates that the person is unhappy with his or her anatomically healthy and normal sex organ. In his extensive studies, doctor and psychologist Sylvain Dullak devoted a lot of time and attention to the separation between the biological and psychological gender. He based the research on his own reflections and experiences. He says for himself that he “escaped from the body in which he felt as a prisoner… and has become a woman with the help of surgery.” This shows a modern way of resolving such dilemmas.

 

Today everyone can have sex change surgery thanks to the advances in medicine.

 

Surgery in extreme cases

In today’s world you can find a solution for almost every discomfort as regards your body. When reaching sexual identity where physical appearance and mentality don’t agree, mentality can easily subdue physical appearance with the help of extreme sex operations. It’s often effective to undergo “treatment” in the form of taking hormone pills for the sex to which an individual wants to change. Namely, sex operations are still very expensive.
