Men should suffer as well!
Men should suffer as well!
Women always accuse men of not participating at birth and thus being unaware of the pain caused. Read about the ways in which different cultures identified the pain experienced by woman at birth. Very intriguing!
Today’s society has no concept of ancient customs and strong symbolism. Men have maternity leave, and they only experience the greatest pain at the child’s birth if his dear partner sticks her nails into his palms during contractions, or the day after the night of drinking. To date many nations in the world have been practicing a different custom that we will call couvade, from the French word couver (hatch). The tradition is widely used in a number of variations, and the modern term used is sympathetic pregnancy, although the meanings of the terms do not overlap entirely.
The seriousness of the man’s role at the birth of a child was taken to the limit by Indians from Mexico, the Huichol tribe. A woman was having birth on a carpet, and behind her was a sort of a platform on which a man was lying and sitting. He had a rope tied around his testicles, which was held by the woman giving birth. When the woman had a contraction she, of course, pulled the rope.
There are several symptoms for couvade. If the role of father was not strong, the father tried to make the connection with a child trough symbolic birth. Fatherhood was not important in a matriarchal society, and in this way the presumed father gained the right of the holder of the family tree and family inheritance. The other explanation is magically animalistic. A man tries to attract evil spirits by imitating birth and thus avert their attention away from the child and mother. By observing all the customs that pregnant women have, he tries to ensure the spirits will be friendly to the child. Couvade is still practiced among us, for instance, among Bascs, otherwise the phenomenon has been known since the Antiquity and it was widely used among the tribes of North and South America, Africa, China and India.
Couvade is widely use in the world. It largely involves imitation of pregnancy, which means that a man lies in a bed, and some of them get swollen bellies, they vomit and similar. It may begin in the third trimester, or after the birth of a child. It is interesting that even today the symptoms of sympathetic pregnancy appear, but we do not identify them as such any more. Men complain about nerves or reduced activity, however, a large number of them gain weight and they have the feeling of nausea, which along with back pains and other symptoms can be linked to the above phenomenon.
