Dispelling myths about same-sex orientation
Below are some myths about homosexual people that are definitely untrue.

Homosexual people abuse children.
People still believe there’s a connection between same-sex orientation and paedophilia, but the truth is much closer. Numerous studies showed that the offender is often a relative who the child and his or her parents trust. Sometimes it’s easier to point your finger at someone you don’t know than to face the truth. Parents should change this belief, not only to change the view on homosexual people, but also to raise their own awareness and to protect their children against the real threat.
Homosexual people cannot have children and they therefore recruit them.
Parents, who want to protect their children and are incapable to face the truth, blame LGBT communities. Of course, LGBT communities don’t recruit anyone. And even if that was true, they wouldn’t be successful because people cannot choose their sexual orientation, or change it every season according to the latest fashion. Otherwise, there are enough volunteers in the world and such recruitment is completely unnecessary.
Homosexual people demand special rights.
Homosexual people demand equal rights as other people have them. The right to get married isn’t a special right because about 90% of people exercise it. Also, the right not to be discriminated at the workplace isn’t a special right invented for homosexuals only. It’s not a privilege to be a citizen who expects the state to protect his or her basic rights.
Homosexual people want to undermine Christianity.
Believe it or not, but most homosexual people are Christians and have no problems with God.
Homosexual people represent a threat to marriage.
Marriage is definitely threatened, but the threat isn’t posed by homosexuality. Alas, heterosexuals don’t need a lot of help to devalue marriage. Same-sex marriage wouldn’t undermine the institution of marriage. Instead, it would add a new view on marriage.
Homosexual people spread AIDS.
It’s true that the first outbreaks of AIDS in the USA happened in the gay community and among intravenous drug users. Today, almost 30 years later, we know that nobody is safe from AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Maybe that’s just another way of deceiving ourselves and little consolation that it only happens to homosexuals and not heterosexuals.
Lesbians hate men.
Well, similar to a heterosexual woman who is sometimes fed up with men, a lesbian can feel like that too. We can’t, and don’t, want to deny this fact. It’s also inappropriate to make any such generalisations. Maybe this is a result of men’s hatred towards lesbians because they aren’t interested in them.
Gays are only interested in sex.
No more, or less, than heterosexual people. Who doesn’t want to have sex? And since when is this a crime?
Gays are feminine.
Queer community is very colourful and diverse. Sometimes it’s better to learn about something before judging it.
“Someone” made him like that.
Yes, today this someone is often the mother – the universal culprit of all the bad things happening in the world –, which results in many self-accusations and a lot of distress.
If your friends confide their homosexual orientation to you, they’re hitting on you!
There are probably many homosexual people who experienced that. However, since when homosexual orientation means that such a person cannot have friends?
Beliefs are sometimes the worst enemy of the mind.
