High-school sweethearts statistics: Love at all costs

Everyone had a sweetheart in high school. Some couples stayed together. You probably have friends who have been together since high school days. High school is the ideal ground for meeting new people and forming couples. You never again have the chance to spend so much time with such a colourful bunch of people, and you never again have so much choice. It’s also true that you are never again so naïve, confused, and full of hormones and ideals. I probably don’t exaggerate by saying this is the worst possible time to enter into a lifelong relationship. Wild hormones make you hungry for love so you believe anything. You fall in love without any major consequences until the first sexual intercourse takes place. Many people are chained to their partner by their first intercourse. They start mixing love, responsibility, decisions, shame, attachment, vulnerability and many other exaggerated emotions, which creates a big, real and unique – Love. When problems arise, they just deny them. Some people suppress everything and others turn into unrecognisable being. The hardest part is to admit that you are wrong, and that you spent so many years with the person who seemed the right one in the rush of hormones. Once the person is part of your life, you have to change your whole life instead of that part. There are of course exceptions; couples who found each other already in kindergarten and know they are meant for each other. Many people are unhappy in the world because love helps some people, while it denies the chance of happiness to others.

People very much like to believe in their fate. It’s wonderful to listen to the stories of older couples who remember events when they were 25 years old with nostalgia and seek coincidences. When the lesson in mathematics was cancelled and when fate united them in the classroom and so on. Unfortunately, you are only deceiving yourself. There are signs for the course of every event in the world; if nowhere else than in a bird’s flight. Love has to be something special, otherwise it’s empty. However, the truth lies elsewhere. If a relationship is formed at such an early age, the two people entering a relationship still have unfinished personalities. In other words, they have children’s love which is related to sexual instinct. Now the relationship formed in such a way, and between such people, hinders the development of both partners. It hinders the growth of love as well as the development of personality. This is also evident in sexual development. I don’t claim that sex is bad. It may be perfect for both. It’s similar to cooking. Normally, you can prepare a whole range of tasty dishes; the ones that you know how to prepare them; by including specific ingredients and according to a standard recipe. Sometimes you change the kitchen, and sometimes you try new things and enjoy your result. You have to make an effort to change the routine and cook a new dish. If you don’t travel around the world and taste different dishes and flavours, and see new ways of preparing food, you probably cannot be considered a chef. Nevertheless, you won’t go hungry. That’s a fact. And then you eat in an elite restaurant and you’re left speechless. Although you discovered a new world, you pay the receipt and say to yourself mumbling to the floor: “It wasn’t so good at all. I’d rather eat the lunch my wife’s makes me. At least I don’t feel hungry afterwards!”

Maybe good sex life isn’t so difficult to maintain. It’s easy to accept the good side of sharing life with someone, understanding that person and being used to all the partner’s advantages and disadvantages. However, such a couple doesn’t change from the time they met back in high-school. They consider the same things funny and each have a certain personality. How could they be any different? They don’t have to change because there is no need for any change. They already have the person who loves them, loves them for who they are. Changes only create problems. People always have to retain certain characteristics of the old self to keep their love alive. If partners undergo radical changes, their love also has to change and grow, instead of remaining at that stage. You surely know couples who split after 8 or 10 years. They found new partners in a few years and now they radiate joy. This might be a stereotype, but what is the cause? You simply start using the correct filters in the search for a person with whom you want to spend your whole life. You learn, grow, and find out what you want and what your goals are, and how you will achieve them. You find a person who lives on his or her own, has a strong personality and is independent. The person represents the anti-pole which you respect. It’s rare to meet people who succeed regardless of when they fall in love and how long they’ve been in the relationship. This however is the only way to mature as an individual as well as have a solid relationship and love. Love isn’t like that gets better with age. Love quickly turns sour.
