How Much Does a Child Cost?

Every happy mommy will confirm that a child is priceless. The easiest and cheapest way to have it is the good old way. You know, mommy and daddy love each other and a stork brings them a child. However, life isn’t a fairytale. Couples who aren’t able to conceive and to deliver their child in the traditional way are left with adoption and artificial insemination. This costs money.

Artificial insemination

This is also termed in vitro fertilization, or in short, IVF. This term denotes all the treatment procedures for infertility where the woman’s egg is fertilized with the man’s sperm outside her body, after which the fertilized egg is placed inside her womb.

The price of the procedure includes the necessary medical examinations, the puncture or taking of eggs, fertilization in a dish or under a microscope and the transfer of embryos into the womb. It ranges between 1000 and 1600 dollars (800 to 1200 euros), depending on the type of the procedure selected and the specific requirements of individual cases, to which you have to add a high cost of hormone drugs to stimulate ovulation in the amount of 400 to 700 dollars (300 to 500 euros). The price range differs greatly from country to country. In Europe, the lowest price is in Prague, while IVF and hormone drugs cost over 5300 dollars (4000 euros) in Graz.

Adoption

Naturally, adoption is free-of-charge, otherwise it would be illegal, but the accompanying costs of the procedure aren’t insignificant. Adopters who satisfy legal requirements can make an adoption application with an adoption agency or a social work center and after consultations with social workers and psychologists, who determine their suitability, they are registered and then they wait. And wait … There are a lot of couples waiting to adopt a child, but only of them will fulfil their wish after years of waiting because there are too few children in their country. Many people therefore decide to adopt a child abroad. Adoption has turned into a real business as various organizations that help adopters arrange everything show no hesitation in making a large profit on the distress of couples who can’t have their own children and orphans who want and deserve a family. 

The price of adoption depends on the package of services that such an organization provides and on the country from which the child comes, and it ranges between 13,200 and 26,400 dollars (10,000 to 20,000 euros). Columbian children are supposed to be the cheapest to adopt, while the most expensive adoptions are in Russia. The price includes the preparations and translation of the necessary documentation, various courses, a psychological examination, the preparation of expert opinion, and the costs of the procedure, airline tickets and accommodation. In addition, it’s usually a rather wearisome and long-lasting procedure and the outcome is uncertain. Naturally, there are also organizations of which the true aim is to help couples and orphans to have a family – an acquaintance from Austria adopted a girl from Ethiopia with the help of such an organization and had no costs except the airline ticket, and the adoption was finalized within two days.

The miracle of life can therefore be yours for a very small amount of money. Just think how much money you paid for your wheels …
