Many people are unfaithful. But how often? And why do they cheat on somebody? Who does it more often, men or women?

Many people are unfaithful, but is that wrong?

It is generally believed that people in western societies see an extramarital relationship in a negative light. This was not only influenced by the Church which defines such relationship as sinful but also psychiatry which has considered such action as sick in the literature until recently. A person who has an extramarital relationship was considered to have an immature, egocentric and neurotic personality. Non-acceptance was also caused by our assumption that a marriage satisfies human needs for sexuality and  extramarital relationships are therefore not necessary. In addition, they presumably threaten the marriage and consequently the family that represents the cornerstone of a society.

How many people are unfaithful?

In the USA, one of the first studies was carried out more than 40 ears ago and it showed that about 50 per cent of Americans had one or several extramarital relationships before they turned 40. The same applied for 26 per cent of women of the same age. New studies show that there is approximately the same percentage of men and women who decide on an extramarital relationship. This is applies in particular to young and employed women who proved, by emancipation, that they can handle the male world in this area as well.

Many people are unfaithful, but who is worse? Men or women?

According to research conducted, men enter into extramarital relationships more easily and frequently. The reasons are the relations between the partners in a marriage and not dissatisfaction with the wife, as you might think. On the other hand, women largely have just one such relationship and usually  enter into it because of curiosity. This can be a double-edged sword because the affair  usually grows into a real love story.

And the reasons why people are unfaithful?

They include loneliness, a need to prove yourself that you are not old and are still attractive and charming,  and a desire for an emotional thrill. Many people find an additional partner only because they miss the company and the feeling that they are special to somebody.

Consequences that follow if people are unfaithful

In our culture, an extramarital relationship had, and still has, a negative connotation. It is definitely an act of curiosity, but afterward there are a number of questions and doubts as well as disapproval. The partner’s extramarital relationship is still a severe blow to our cultural sphere. However, more than three quarters of societies are polygamous and they do not assess physical infidelity as something to be upset about, meaning that there, either all people are unfaithful, or none are.. Therefore, they do not experience anger, sadness or destruction as it is typical of the cheated individuals of our society, who along with the above factors cannot face the fact that the partner had sexual relations with another person  and lied to and betrayed them, and he or she did not think how they will feel if they find out about it.

What would you do if your partner was one of the people who are unfaithful?

According to research, people who believe that people are unfaithful but that their partner never cheated on them, or they did not know about it, would throw the partner out of the apartment immediately, or they would leave. However, when it in fact happens, they usually do neither. Two thirds of marriages survive an extramarital relationship of one or both partners.

Josef Hora, well-known Czech poet, asks if a lover is an inappropriate person in an appropriate place. Or is he an appropriate person in an inappropriate place? In any case, the ink of infidelity can never be entirely spilled on the partner and his or her lover without also spilling  some of it on ourselves.
