Sexual double standards: What researchers think
Durham University in the UK conducted a study about the feelings people experience after having a one-night stand and discovered some great sexual double standards. The study, which included 1,743 men and women, produced the following results: 80 per cent of men and 54 per cent of women do not have a guilty conscience after a one-night stand. Men reported greater self-confidence and sexual satisfaction following the one-night stand and, in addition, they boast about it to their friends more than women.
Sexual double standards: What society thinks
Why women usually prefer to say nothing about an affair? One of the journalists wrote that the study is the proof that women keep one-night stands secret because they think it is the right thing to do and not because they would want to. There are also some cases where they want to keep it secret, nevertheless, the study is one more proof that men and women still have sexual double standards – men who have more one-night stands are considered cool by their friends and women are considered whores. Even younger women who belong to the one-night-stand generation are not yet immune to sexual double standards and cultural expectations. Even if one-night stands were approved in the society, this would probably not change women to be proud of their sexual encounters. It is therefore not unusual that women keep a one-night stand secret.
Sexual double standards: What evolution thinks
However, in this case researchers focused more on the biological interpretations of the apparent
sexual double standards, instead of the cultural ones: “In evolutionary terms women bear the brunt of parental care and it has been generally thought that it was to their advantage to choose their mate carefully and remain faithful to make sure that their mate had no reason to believe he was raising another man's child,” said the leader of the study.
