We Are Witnessing a Metrosexual Revolution!

A metrosexual man is a man created by consumers, the urban way of life and mass media in the Western society.

The contributing factor in feminising men are the magazines that advertise a new type of man, different from the traditional “macho”. This is a straight guy with feminine traits and, according to Fisher, it doesn’t entirely conform to the socially accepted or traditional sexual stereotypes, irrespective of his sexual orientation. The feminisation of men has been caused by the change in social roles of the sexes. The new man looks feminine and is more self-confident, caring and emotional. In sociological terms, a metrosexual is a man who looks like David Beckham and Brad Pitt.

Where was the naked body of a man published for the first time?

Idealised and aesthetic pictures of more or less naked man first appeared in bodybuilding magazines and only later in gay magazines. Today, such images appear constantly in all other media. The perfect man is muscular, in good shape, healthy and has success in his career and in seducing women. It sometimes happens that a man’s body is idealised, meaning that he’s presented in an active role and with the intention of showing his body to others (men and women). Male readers reportedly identify themselves with the metrosexual models appearing in magazine. It’s no longer unusual if the perfect male body is slender, muscular and shows more feminine traits.

The metrosexual

The term ‘metrosexual’ first appeared at the end of the millennium. It was used by Mark Simpson in Britain’s The Independent to describe a new, narcissistic and media-hungry type of man as the criterion of a successful man in the third millennium. This man has been created by Hollywood and the adverts and magazines that present different lifestyles. The main reason is the desire to replace the traditional, “not-thinking-about-himself” man who isn’t very consumer-oriented. Simpson formulated the concept of a metrosexual man in his book called Male Impersonators, where he analyses an ever more aesthetic and unoriginal world for men. A new word has therefore been coined; ‘metro’ refers to a metropolis as the environment with sufficient infrastructure (fashion offer, beauty salons and sports centers) for dandism nowadays, and the affix ‘sexual’ refers to heterosexuality and stresses the feminisation of a new male stance, but at the same time, defines the stereotype that only gay men pay too much attention to their bodies and that they created the metrosexual.

Metrosexual revolution

According to Fisher, metrosexuality represents a free life without the standard and rigid patterns of behavior. Metrosexuality is supposedly the final stage of human sexuality, where social differences are minimal. It somehow involves a mutual exchange of sex roles. And according to Sandra Bartky, that’s based on the idea that we’re “born as men or women, but not masculine or feminine. As the phenomenon of the metrosexual shows, the latter characteristics are artificial because it’s up to an individual to define the norms and change them, which the metrosexual also reflected on the outside, in his appearance.
