Women's pornography is connected to feminism

The history of pornography for women dates back to the 1980s. Porn movies made especially for women were the only logical answer to the feminist critique of pornography of that time, which was very degrading to women. Porn movies, that were show at the British cinemas in the 1970s, were full of physical and verbal abuse of women which resulted in a wave of disapproval and disgust. It was only a question of time for women's pornography to become the secret weapon of the feminist struggle for equality.  

Women's pornography presents: Candida Royalle and Scarlot Harlot

One of the key figures of that time was Candida Royale, a former porn star, who is nowadays one of the most important figures at Femme Productions, the leading American publishing house for women's pornography. She made the movie Deep Inside Arnie Sprinkle in 1982 which became the first porn movie for women. It was the first movie in which women not only had the leading roles in front of the camera, but also behind the scenes. Because of its educational role the film was also supported by sex therapists. Candida threw men off their phallic thrones and changed the world of pornography forever. Another important character was Carol Leigh who was known under the name of Scarlot Harlot. She was responsible for showing sexuality in porn movies from a woman's perspective. Her first movie Masturbation Memoirs was shot in 1996 and it shows three women who talk about their masturbating habits. Harlot was also an activist for the rights of prostitutes and the first one to call them 'sex workers'.

Women's pornography directed by men

Among the more famous female directors of women's pornography we must mention Catherine Breillat (Anatomy of Hell, Romance), Juliet Anderson (Educating Nina) and Virginie Despentes (Baise-moi). It is interesting that we can also find some famous directors of conventional movies in the world of women's pornography. The famous Danish director Lars von Trier established a branch company called Puzzy Power which specializes in hard pornography for women. You should definitely watch Femi-X and Beyond, All About Anna, Constance and Pink Prison. In these movies men are exploited in the same way as women.

Women's pornography offers something for every taste 

Production in porn movies for women is usually more sophisticated that the one in porn movies for men, because women pay greater attention to the scene, costumes and props. The story always has a deeper meaning because the meaning and the message of women's pornography is just as important as its erotic side. The feminist note is visible especially in the fact that women always have the possibility of choice and there is nothing essentially male in the movies.

The content of pornographic movies of course depends on the market. Porn movies want to please all the segments of the public and it would be unwise to say that pornography is there only to please men. Its only purpose is to create sexual arousal but there is always a problem because what is erotic for some can be offensive to others. In the end, porn movies only express the wishes of the audience, and it depends of the audience what they want to see and what they don't.
