Endorphins - Body's Happy-Makers

6.05.2010 | By: T. F.

Read about the body's happy-makers, the endorphins, that make sex is such a thrill. They are released, in particular, during an orgasm and they cause the state of euphoria and pleasure. And how do you retain a large amount of these hormones as long as possible?

Body's happy-makers - What?

Happiness hormones endorphins are regulators of pain and a natural drug. The word endorphin is comprised of two parts; endogenous – meaning inner, and morphine – as an anti-pain substance. Endorphins are endogenous opiates because they work in the same way as opium, with the difference of being produced by the nervous system. They are released in larger amounts in the state of pain because they work as natural painkillers that alleviate pain and soothe inflammations. In fact, they are released all the time. In physical strain, they increase endurance and help you feel good – hence the explanation for an obsession with exercising. The amount of endorphins is also increased under the strain experienced by soldiers during a battle or students prior to the period of examinations. This is also the reason they are called the body's happy-makers. Because they make you happier when everything else would fail.

Body's happy-makers - When?

The largest amount of these body's happy-makers is released during sexual intercourse, followed by physical exercise, listening to music and eating chocolate and chilli.

A larger amount of endorphins is mostly released during lovemaking and orgasm, which  makes you feel good and happy - hence happy-makers. A lot of endorphins are also released in recreation and all the activities that generate good mood. Giving up such activities causes the abstinence syndrome that  is called the abstinence crisis by experts.

Body's happy-makers - How strong?

The power of these happy-makers is always tested when giving birth during which a woman has severe pains. Nevertheless, many women give birth without any painkillers. The body regulates the degree of pain with natural painkillers – endorphins; the amount of the happy-makers increases during birth and it reaches its height just after giving birth, so the mother can skip rest after the birth and start taking care of the baby. Endorphins also ensure the production of milk and help establish the attachment between the mother and her child.

Physicians believe the amount of happiness hormone decreases in years, which makes it even more important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, stay in shape and do the things that contribute to a better flow of endorphins (sexual activity, physical exercise, listening to music etc.).

Dr. Thomas Davis compared the body's happy-makers with the functionality of the Swiss knife, which is used for cutting, opening bottles, and it serves as a screwdriver or pincers; all that is therefore kept in one small knife.
