Body piercing is the art of decorating the human body with jewellery that is placed in the hole made by the piercing. The most common form of decorating the body is ear piercing, while some people also have piercings done on other parts of their body, such as the nose, lips, tongue, eyebrows or navel, while those who are more courageous have piercings done in the nipples, clitoris, penis or scrotum. In such cases, however, great caution should be used and, needless to say, the following words of advice should be taken into consideration.

Caution exercised before the genitalia piercing

You have to be aware that genitalia piercing is in fact somewhat a tiny surgical procedure – namely, a hole is made into your skin. You should therefore respect your body as well as the procedure itself. Before the procedure, carry out thorough research on which professional piercing in your vicinity salon is the most appropriate and talk to people who have piercings about their experience. Take the time to choose the option that will yield the best results at minimum risk. In the piercing studio, pay attention to the general cleanliness of the room, the experience and professionalism of the staff and the suitability and sterility of their equipment. Jewellery should meet the quality and be made from surgical steel, gold, platinum or titan as other alloys (nickel or brass) my cause skin allergies. If you have doubts, you thank the staff for their time and find another studio where they’ll provide a better service at less risk.

Care after the genitalia piercing

The time of healing differs according to the type of piercing and lasts from one to six months. During that time, you have to disinfect your piercing regularly with an appropriate agent that doesn’t contain alcohol or petroleum. You can use antibacterial soap or sterile saline solution to wash your piercing at least twice a day. Complete sexual abstinence is required for some time and later you have to use caution to a certain extent. In penile piercings, use of condoms that are sufficiently strong and large is required for a while. Infections are no fun, so taking shortcuts often ends badly. You also have to avoid playing with your jewellery because every move can stimulate the growth of bacteria in the unhealed wound, thus causing an infection or prolonging the healing process. Every time before touching your piercing, you have to wash your hands thoroughly and pay particular attention to the dirt under your fingernails. It’s recommended that your genitalia piercing doesn’t come into contact with water at least once a month, meaning that you aren’t allowed to go swimming and you have to protect the piercing against moisture while showering. Don’t change jewellery too often and you definitely mustn’t exchange it with friends. Also, the wound heals faster with zinc creams and vitamin tablets.

In case of complications consult your doctor

Redness or slight swelling in the area around the new genitalia piercing is a normal phenomenon, but if it doesn’t disappear, that’s a sign of infection and you therefore have to see your doctor as soon as possible. An infection is also often accompanied by a burning sensation or itching. If the infection is treated on time, it doesn’t pose a serious threat to your health. Occasional bleeding lasting for a short time is common in fresh genitalia piercing and can be stopped by direct pressure on the place where bleeding occurs, but if it lasts more than two or three minutes, you have to seek medical assistance immediately.
