How Can You Increase Your Fertility?

Maybe you don’t want to have a child right now, but remember that you’ll become less fertile with age. So, what can you do to increase your fertility?

Nowadays, women want to have children at a later age, either for financial reasons or lack of time because of their career or studies, or they just haven’t found the right guy yet. So, it often happens that a woman in her late twenties or early thirties wants to get pregnant, but finds out that she’s no longer fertile. Although it’s not too late for pregnancy at that age, the fact is that fertility decreases with age. A woman is considered to be infertile if she tries to get pregnant for a long time, but all  attempts are unsuccessful.

If you’re below 35, the ‘normal’ period of conception usually lasts up to a year, but if you’re over 35, you have to add another six months. After that time, a woman is usually considered to be infertile and begins treatment for infertility.

If you don’t want to have a child right now, but you know that you’ll have children later in life, you can slightly increase your fertility by making some changes in your life that can have a positive effect on your fertility.

If you don’t see your gynecologist on a regular basis, make an appointment as soon as possible and ask him/her about your fertility. The next time you see your gynecologist, tell him/her about any changes that you’ve noticed in your body, even if you don’t find them important. The symptoms of some diseases are very common symptoms, so you can easily overlook them, but they can considerably influence your fertility.

Maintain appropriate body weight


Body weight strongly affects levels of the hormone estrogen, produced by fat cells in the body. If you’re overweight, your levels of estrogen in your body are too high and this has the same effect as if you were taking the contraceptive pill. Your levels of insulin can also increase and have an adverse effect on your ovaries so that they stop producing eggs. On the other hand, if you’re underweight, your levels of estrogen are too low, which slows down your reproductive cycle and, in extreme cases, even stops it.

Avoid great physical strain


If you engage in strenuous physical exercise, your periods may be irregular or even absent. This, of course, affects your chances of getting pregnant, especially if the pregnancy is planned, because your fertile days (ovulation) are irregular, so it’s difficult to determine when you’re actually fertile. That’s why a lot of female athletes have to adpt a less strenuous exercise regime  when trying to conceive to increase their chances of getting pregnant.

Stop smoking


It’s been confirmed that smoking has an adverse effect on the fertility of women as well as men. It’s harmful for your ovaries and can also induce certain negative changes to your ovaries and make you more prone to genetic abnormalities. So, if you’re a smoker, it’s advisable that you quit.

Have safe sex


Infertility is mainly caused by various sexually transmitted diseases. Symptoms are often difficult to detect and as a result the condition isn’t properly treated, which causes certain changes to your body and has an adverse effect on your fertility. For instance, sexually transmitted diseases can leave scars on your Fallopian tubes, so it’s almost impossible for eggs to travel to your womb. It’s advisable that you use condoms and undergo regular testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
