Make sure your penis is clean

There are collections of the so-called smegma under the foreskin, or in other words, a white cheesy substance that is produced by oil-secreting glands in the foreskin and that appears on the glans penis. For that reason, the foreskin should be pulled back and the penis should be washed regularly with a mild gel and warm water. If you do not wash the glans penis, it will develop a very unpleasant smell and the excessive collections of smegma can result in an infection or even the disease called paraphimosis. This is the so-called “Spanish collar”, the painful swelling of an infected foreskin and an infected glans penis. Why “Spanish collar”? Because of the collars that the Spanish nobility wore in the 17th century which look very similar to a swollen foreskin.

Women have smegma as well

Female genitals can also produce smegma, particularly under the clitoral hood and around the vaginal lips. Women therefore have to maintain careful genital hygiene just as men do because the vagina can also be attacked by severe infections. Namely, smegma chemically changes very quickly and thus irritates the skin that is particularly sensitive on the genitals. Smegma is caused by sperm, sweat, fatty tissue, urine, and menstruation, which means that women are more likely to contract various infections in the time of their period if they do not practice good hygiene. When talking about an unpleasant smell of female genitals, mention should be made of excessive vaginal cleansing which removes the bacteria that every vagina needs to have a normal pH value.

Abnormal development of the prepuce

Serious problems can arise in case of the so-called phimosis or foreskin contraction, i.e. the prepuce around the penis head cannot be pulled back. As said earlier, dirt accumulates under the prepuce and men who suffer from phimosis cannot keep it clean. They therefore have to see a physician to have it surgically removed. If you see this ring on the top of your child’s penis, the operation is the least painful and nothing unpleasant. If you wait too long, it can cause erection problems. In case of severe phimosis, the man can also have problems with masturbation, and can experience great pain and even bleeding during sexual intercourse.
