Inflammation of the breasts: Symptoms
Symptoms are as follows: swelling and redness of breast skin, the skin in the infected area is warm and causes pain when touched. Woman patient sometimes has increased body temperature, leucocytosis and swollen lymphatic glands under the armpits.
Inflammation of the breasts most commonly affects women between the ages of 18 and 50. Usually it is connected with breastfeeding and occurs during the first six weeks after the birth. It is caused by the bacteria which travel through the milk ducts.
Nipple inflammation is called thelitis and
inflammation of the breasts mastitis, which, if untreated, can develop into chronic abscess. When abscess is formed, the skin of the infected area becomes ‘wavy’. Breast inflammation is treated with antibiotics, as they destroy the bacteria. Abscess can burst spontaneously on its own, otherwise it has to be removed surgically.
Inflammation of the ring or perialreoloral inflammation is typical for younger women who smoke. This kind of inflammation often develops into an abscess and is highly uncomfortable, as it is recurrent despite antibiotic treatment. Surgical removal is necessary in this case.
