Male Hormonal Contraceptives

Medicine seems to be a step closer to developing male hormonal contraceptives. Recent studies have shown that progestin efficiently suppresses the production of sperms.

 

Hormonal contraception for men is still in the stage of research and development.


In more than 30 studies, Australian experts used various quantities of testosterone combined with various quantities of progestin (which is also present in female contraception together with estrogene) on men aged between 18 and 51. They have proven that this combination of hormones regulates the production of sperms more successfully than testosterone on its own, and it has also been proven that testosterone can diminish the production of sperms and thus act as a male contraceptive.



Male hormonal contraceptives are waiting for us just around the corner, probably in near future.

The effects of hormonal treatment to slow down sperms is hard to predict for each individual man because different men have different testosterone levels and thus respond differently to treatments. Apart from this, the method should be just as reliable as other contraceptives and can actually be compared to the results of vasectomy.

The study was based on the analysis of all published research on male hormonal contraception done during 1990 and 2006 and lasted for at least 3 months.

 

When will men be the ones to control pregnancy with the help of contraception? Some urologists claim that the discovery of an adequate male hormonal contraceptive is still a long way off. But this kind of discovery would definitely make many women, who have to deal with side effects of birth control pills, quite happy.
