Can problems associated with the menopause end your exciting sex life? Of course not.

Many women expect that their libido will decrease with age. Could low sex drive actually be the result of their expectations? (jlp)

Many people believe that when a woman reaches her menopause, she loses her desire for sex because her fertile period is over. But that’s not true at all. It often happens that sex improves at that age because there’s no longer any risk of getting pregnant or being caught by your children while having sex. Most probably they’re all grown up and have left home a while ago. Although certain changes take place in your body which can slightly decrease your libido, these changes are just one of the causes of your low sex drive. Other causes are drugs, diseases and lots of stress as well as poor self-image.

Are low levels of estrogen responsible for diminished sexual drive?

In the menopause, your body produces less estrogen, the female hormone, and some people believe that this causes a decrease in your libido. On the other hand, studies have shown different results. The main reasons for low sex drive are your attitude to sex and general health. Low levels of estrogen aren’t the key element in case of diminished libido. Researchers have come to an interesting conclusion that only women who expect to have problems with their libido during the menopause actually have slightly lower sex drive.

Can testosterone increase your sex drive?

A lot of women start taking testosterone in the postmenopausal period. Testosterone allays some symptoms of the menopause, such as hot flushes and night sweats, and has other positive effects, for instance, it increases your energy and sex drive and makes you feel good about yourself. Despite all its positive effects, testosterone also represents a certain risk – the risk of developing breast cancer.

Women in the postmenopausal period don’t always lose their sex drive. There’s no direct link between the menopause and diminished libido. Low sexual desire is most probably the result of other factors rather than the changes that take place in a woman’s body during her menopause. So, there’s simply no reason why women couldn’t have an exciting and busy sex life at a mature age.
