Nipple Inversion

Flat nipples or nipple inversion are a phenomenon that affects 10 per cent of women in one way or another.

Inverted nipples can be permanently treated with surgery.

What are flat or inverted nipples?

In most women, nipples stick out from 0.2-0.4 inches from the lobe. Of course, their size changes during sexual intercourse because of arousal. The so-called inverted nipples, or in other words nipples that are turned inwards, become erect in another way during sexual arousal. The nipple does not become erect outwards, but it turns inwards. Inverted nipples may look like a dimple. Both men and women have them, especially if they are overweight. If you think that the phenomenon of nipple inversion is very rare, you are mistaken. Namely, 10 per cent of women have the above deformation of nipples which can appear on both or only one nipple. The cause is too short and too tight connective tissue in the region of the lobe.

Are inverted nipples dangerous?

A lot of women notice inverted nipples in puberty when their bodies start developing into adult bodies. Many teenage girls (and boys) may be very uncomfortable and lack self-confidence because they feel that there is something wrong with their body’s development. If you have inverted nipples for as long as you can remember, then there is no reason for alarm. Nipple inversion is a natural phenomenon and the natural state of your breasts which can be treated with the help of medicine. Inverted nipples are dangerous only is they appear suddenly and unexpectedly. This is a sign of cancer and in such a situation you therefore have to see your physician.

Inverted or flat nipples are not a rare phenomenon.

Breastfeeding

If your nipples become erect outwards despite being inverted, breastfeeding should not pose a major problem. There might be a few complications if your nipples do not become erect because it is slightly harder for the baby to take the nipple into the mouth. Patience is therefore required and eventually the baby’s strong sucking will draw the nipple out. You will be able to help by applying an ice cube wrapped in a flannel to the nipple beforehand and by stroking the areola (the pink area round the nipple). If you still have flat or inverted nipples, you can use the baby’s bottle and squeeze milk directly into the bottle.

The phenomenon is dangerous only if nipples start suddenly turning more and more inwards.

How to treat inverted nipples?

As inverted nipples are a cosmetic phenomenon, they can be treated with cosmetic surgery. The procedure lasts for an hour. You may feel tension and a slight pain after it, and a swelling may appear which, however, disappears after a day. Of course, this procedure also has its negative sides. In the worst case, your nipples can become insensitive. The effects are permanent and nipple inversion recurs only in rare cases.

Inverted nipples can also be treated during pregnancy, by wearing breast shields under your bra. You wear them the last 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy. They are quite comfortable, so you will barely feel them. They are designed specifically for this purpose and they press gently on the breast around the nipple. At first you wear them for one or two hours and then gradually increase the amount of time you have them on you. Your physician will give you more information.

Nobody is perfect. Although our eyes can see greater beauty in symmetry, the human body is very unsymmetrical. Nipple inversion can cause a lot of psychological and sexual problems for women, where low self-confidence and negative self-image are the first ones. Every time such a woman is naked, she experiences uneasy feelings. The partner therefore plays an important role. The compliments on her breasts will have a positive influence on her and will mean a step closer to a more relaxed state, which is of key importance in sexuality.
