Doctors are still unable to explain many complications during pregnancy. The scientist persist that many complications can be contributed to bad oral hygiene or, more precisely, a bacteria that live in the oral cavity and can be transferred to the baby by blood. This can cause various serious problems, including premature labor, low birth weight, premature contractions and infections. In case of a cut, hole or any sort of a wound, the bacteria enter the blood system and uterus, which triggers the immune system and, in the worst case, a premature labor. In case you have any dental problems, it is highly advisable to visit a dentist before you decide for a new member of your family.

How can a pregnant woman take care of oral hygiene and health of an unborn baby?

A pregnant woman should wash her teeth regularly, even if it makes her sick. She can try to use a new toothpaste, if the current one doesn't agree with her anymore. Flossing the teeth everyday can be a bit unpleasant during pregnancy because of increased sensitivity, but it is still advisable. Experts advise an electric toothbrush which thoroughly cleans the plaque. Besides all the aforementioned things, it is also advisable to use a mouthwash.

Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy has influence on the gums

When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes sudden hormonal changes. Hormones travel through the body by veins, even to gums, which can increase the possibility of a gum disease. The problem becomes bigger if a woman isn't paying enough attention to her oral hygiene. Women who had gum problems before the pregnancy should be especially careful.

Oral hygiene starts with an appropriate diet

An appropriate diet is important for oral hygiene. Pregnant women should avoid sodas and beverages full of sugar that stick to the teeth and destroy them. They should drink a glass of water instead. Healthy gums, teeth and oral cavity require a healthy diet. Even if you are experiencing periods of sickness during pregnancy, try to have regular meals, which should be healthy as well. In this way you won't take care only of your gums, but also your unborn baby. Remember, anything that is good for you is also good for the baby. And vice versa.
