This discovery was made by doctors after treating a 52-years old throat cancer patient Carol Kanga. Her treatment was successful, between 2006 and 2007 she was treated with chemotherapy and fed through a tube because she was unable to swallow food or water.
Doctors and scientists involved in Carol’s case told The Sun that Carol got infected with HPV (human papillomavirus) through
oral sex, the virus was not treated, so it caused throat cancer.
HPV attacks throat tissue around the tonsils and base of the tongue. A decade ago the doctors thought that throat cancer is mainly caused by smoking and heavy drinking, but last year Dr. Maura Gillison, a professor of oncology and epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Centre, published a study linking HPV to throat cancer. She found out that HPV-positive throat cancer patients had multiple oral-sex partners.
Dr. Kanga said: “We can’t be afraid to talk about this! The message that oral sex carries risks is just not out there!”
HPV virus can appear in the throat and is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. If it is not treated, it can cause cancer.
