Persistent sexual arousal syndrome in women

This sexual disorder, the syndrome of persistent arousal, was first defined and recorded in 2001 by Dr. Sanda Leiblum. It’s described as arousal without experiencing desire. A woman has to reach an orgasm to relieve the unbearable tension in her body. Unfortunately, she only relaxes temporarily until the tension reappears and she has to relieve it again. Every time it happens the sensations are stronger, and every time it’s more difficult to reach an orgasm. Some women report having 300 orgasms a day! Arousal may also go on for several weeks.

Constant arousal isn’t related to nymphomania

Women generally experience frustration instead of pleasure in such forced masturbation. Those who found themselves in such a situation felt as if being raped by their own bodies. This isn’t nymphomania and it has nothing to do with libido. The problem is in the genitals that receive the wrong messages.

Women suffering from persistent sexual arousal syndrome are of different ages. Some of them are in menopause, while others have a normal menstrual cycle. In g eneral, they hide the condition because of being embarrassed and afraid that the people around them will not understand the nature of their persistent arousal.

Many women also hide the condition from their partners because they are afraid of their lovers' reactions. The affected women lack sleep and consequently mental and physical strength. Some women are even driven to the point of committing a suicide. Their social life is ruined. Lack of sleep and the constant need for masturbation may pose a threat to their jobs.

What is the cause of persistent sexual arousal syndrome?

The most likely cause of persistent arousal is abnormal functioning of the nerves in the limbic system in the brain. The disorder can also be caused by certain drugs. Symptoms slightly differ from woman to woman.

Is it possible to treat the disorder?

It’s difficult to determine the appropriate treatment because the exact cause of persistent arousal is still uncertain. It’s impossible to have a real insight into the problem because of the lack of knowledge about the detailed progress of the disorder. Reasons for the lack of knowledge are a too small number of recorded cases and too little research. Namely, few women decide to see the doctor, as most are embarrassed and think they are sexually abnormal or that they have a too high libido.

Some women take antidepressants to treat this disorder. In extreme cases, doctors use electroshocks that cause severe side effects, such as loss of memory, while their effect is minimal - according to certain reports. The patients try to help themselves by looking for something that can alleviate their pain, stress and discomfort.
