Sex causes headaches in men. Really?
A severe headache caused by sexual intercourse or orgasm occurs in a small percentage of people. Headache during sexual intercourse or "
coital cephalalgia" is a rare disorder causing a splitting headache during any sort of sexual activity as well as masturbation. The pain of this type of headache is felt from the nape of the neck moving to the front of the head, and it is the strongest just before reaching the climax. Such a headache is typical of young men in particular and it can last up to several days. The cause is uncertain but it is a serious matter. Sex causes headaches in both sexes, even though the underlying cause might be different.
Headache destroys sex life of many a couple. Dr. Vincent Martin, a headache specialist, developed an interesting hypothesis based on serotonin.
Why is it illogical that sex causes headaches
Serotonin plays a role of a chemical neurotransmitter in the pathway of pain. It is part of the nervous system of the abdominal cavity. It stimulates peristaltic reflex and it is a psychoactive substance which determines our mood.
Dr. Martin says orgasm can ease migraine. The theory is the following: orgasm releases serotonin and activates nerve pathways in the brain that might get rid of a migraine attack. In more simple terms, orgasm can treat migraine.
Not only sex causes headaches though
Headaches are the most common pain syndrome in people. There are several types of headaches. The most common ones are primary headaches, where the medical cause is very difficult to determine. They occur in 10 to 20% of adults; in women, these headaches are three times more common than in men.
